The smile disappeared from his face. Just like that. The mask cracked right before my eyes, not dramatically, not violently but just enough to reveal something colder beneath.

I wasn’t even sure how much of what I was saying I believed.
I was just playing a dangerous game now. Pushing, probing, daring him to crack. I wanted something. Anything. A slip. A word. A twitch that would confirm what I already feared.
But he remained calm.
