I knocked once. Just once. Then I twisted the handle and walked into Reginald Blackwood’s office without waiting for permission.
The room smelled faintly of old leather and something sharper–polish, maybe. This was the kind of space that existed not for comfort but for intimidation. Dark wood panels climbed the walls like spiders. Every object was placed with intention. Nothing here was accidental.
Reginald sat at the head of the long table, posture relaxed, eyes fixed on the computer screen in front of him as if my presence meant
nothing at all. Like I hadn’t just been summoned. Like he hadn’t dragged me here with a single message and a knock.
I cleared my throat.
“You called for me, Reginald? ”
He didn’t answer right away. His fingers moved across the keyboard with a certain urgency, each click echoing far too loudly in the
silence. Then, finally, he lifted his gaze.
“Yes,” he said calmly. “Have a seat, Miss Hart.” He gestured to the chair opposite him.
My heart thudded violently against my ribs as I crossed the room and sat. The chair was stiff, uncomfortable–designed to remind you
that you were not meant to relax here. I forced my shoulders back and lifted my chin.
Calder stood behind Reginald, hands clasped neatly in front of him, eyes forward. The perfect soldier. When our eyes met briefly, he gave
a small nod–professional, neutral.
No warning. No reassurance. Just mere acknowledgment of my presence,
“I hear you’ve moved into the bedroom where Roman is being treated,” Reginald began, finally closing the laptop and folding his hands
together on the table. Now his full attention was on me.
“Yes,” I said, not backing down. “You had your son watching him. You know exactly why I moved in p>
He studied me in silence, dark eyes sharp and calculating. I dropped my gaze to my hands, fingers twisting together unconsciously.
The words from earlier echoed in my head. What if you’re the one he wants?

“Oh yes.” His voice remained infuriatingly calm. “Since you’ve chosen to treat this situation lightly, I see no reason not to follow it through properly. I’ll station guards outside the restrooms. That way, I’ll be informed whenever you need to use them p>
