Questions that clawed at the back of my skull the moment consciousness fully returned to me–questions layered on top of confusion,
pain, and a deep, gnawing sense that something was wrong. Most of those questions would turn into arguments. Possibly fights. Definitely
explosions.
That was the only reason I wasn’t asking them yet.
Not now. Not when Savannah was still hovering beside me like I might disappear if she blinked too long.
The question I wanted to ask the most–the one that made my chest tighten every time I looked at her – was simple.
Why are you here in Blackwood Manor?
The one place I had spent a lot of my time and effort trying to keep her away from.
Everything I’d done. Every sacrifice. Every lie. Even the distance I’d put between myself and her then–it had all been to keep Savannah
out of this house.
And now she was here. Everything was a mess.
The doctor had come in not long after I’d woken up, poked and prodded, shone lights in my eyes, asked me a dozen questions I barely had the patience for. Apparently, my irritation was a “good sign. ” I’d been cleared to sit up slowly, which I attempted the moment the words
left his mouth.
But Savannah nearly had a heart attack.
“ Roman – Roman, don’t – oh my God, please don’t do that,” she’d panicked, hands hovering uselessly like she didn’t know whether to push me back down or catch me if I fell apart.
“I’m sitting up, not skydiving,” I muttered.
She hadn’t laughed.
Great. Now I was officially an Invalid.

All of them. Well. Almost.
Ryan was missing. Not that his absence improved the atmosphere much. Riley was missing too.
The room was thick with tension – years of resentment, half–healed wounds, and things left unsaid pressing in from every direction.
“Well, ” Rosalie drawled, arms crossed, eyes sharp. “It’s good to see you’re back from limbo. ”
“Rosie!” Ramsey gasped. “That’s not nice. ”
I rolled my eyes weakly. “I guess you’re very happy to see me again, Rosalie. ”
She scoffed. “Oh, you don’t say. Would you at least be decent enough to give us a reason why you p>
“Once a bitch,” Rhys muttered, not bothering to lower his voice, “always a bitch p>
Everyone heard it. Including Rosalie.
“ Can you fuck off for one second?” She hissed.
They’d always hated each other. I was genuinely surprised they hadn’t tried to kill each other at some point.
“Rosalie, not now,” Randall cut in smoothly. “This isn’t the time. ”
She turned on him instantly. “So what time is it? Time to hug and exchange air kisses? Time for a cute little chit–chat over tea p>
“ He just woke up, ” Randall snapped. “You don’t have to transform into a hag immediately p>
I stayed silent.
Partly because Randall wasn’t exactly my favorite person. But mostly because–out of the corner of my eye–I felt it.
Savannah stiffened beside me.
It was subtle. A fractional pause. A tightening of her shoulders. But I noticed it. I always noticed.
I turned my head slowly, my gaze flicking from Savannah to Randall.
He wasn’t looking at Rosalie. He wasn’t looking at me. He was looking at her.
Randall was watching Savannah closely. Too closely that it pissed me off. Something cold slid down my spine.
