Chapter 14:
“Goodnight, Isla,” he mutters, not sparing me a single glance. And with that, he leaves, shutting the door behind him.
Later, I sit on my bed, fresh and comfortable in my red strap nightdress. The cold shower I took earlier calmed my nerves, and thank God I had no issues with the water temperature fluctuating from hot to cold like it had been misbehaving before.
At least I have the house repairs to thank for that.
I toy with Dominic’s card in my hands, running my fingers along its edges. According to the information on it, his full name is Dominic.
Davidson. He is a senior manager at a financial corporation named FlutterCoin Exchange, as stated on the card.
FlutterCoin Exchange? I have never even heard of that corporation before.
there are countless things in this world I don’t know, and Dominic seems like a nice guy. He is handsome, and I am certain that many girls who have seen him must have had the same blushing thoughts that are running through my confused head right now.
With my fingers tapping against the card, different thoughts and questions swirl through my mind.
Should I give Dominic a call? I mean, it’s not like calling him would mean we’re dating or committing to something serious. Besides, he said earlier that he had a great time with me and wants to keep in touch.
He is fun and easy to be around. But what if he ends up wanting something more?
What about Asher? I am already madly in love with him, so much that hiding my feelings all these years feels like it’s killing me inside. And I am still trying my best to keep them hidden, because we are friends. What happened today was a mistake. A mistake that I can’t stop wishing would happen again.
But another part of me knows it shouldn’t. I fear confusion more than anything in my life, and I hate complicating things—especially my relationships with people.
And Asher… well, Asher is so incredibly special to me that I know I would shatter into pieces if anything jeopardized our friendship. I know I want more, but I am scared.
Love can be a tricky Ferris wheel. One moment you’re at the top, feeling like the world belongs to you, and the next, you crash to the bottom, smashed into the dirt.
I hate that love can be so unpredictable, and having witnessed that firsthand with my parents, it terrifies me. They didn’t last, and I don’t ever want that to happen between Asher and me.

And I’m not selfish enough—at least not yet—to risk confusing and complicating my friendship with Asher because of my feelings for him. We are friends. We have to stay that way.
But these feelings…
God, I don’t know if these feelings will ever pass, but I will keep trying my best to subdue them—or better yet, make them vanish. These feelings will pass. They have to.

I stare at the card in my hand for a long moment, a decision slowly taking shape in my mind.
To get over someone, you have to get under someone new. Sandra always chants this whenever we’re at the mall checking out some attractive guy, or at the beach, ogling the wet, chiseled muscles of hot surfers riding the waves.
Maybe she’s right. Maybe her advice will help me this time. Even if it doesn’t, at least I’ll know I tried.
I pick up my phone and carefully type in the numbers from the card. Once finished, I press dial. Within seconds, the call connects, and I could hear Dominic’s familiar deep voice on the other end.
I hope I know what I’m doing.
