Chapter 27:
Victor bites down on his lower lip to stifle a laugh at my remark. I sigh and shake my head. He has every right to gloat about how attractive he is—because the truth is, with that dirty golden hair and his almost angelic face set perfectly on a well-defined, athletic frame, Victor has no problem sweeping up ninety-five percent of the women he runs into at a nightclub.
A few minutes later, the same blonde waitress brings our order on a black tray, and I nearly whistle when she slips a small note into the breast pocket of Victor’s black biker jacket. Her red fingernails trail along the collar before she struts back to the brewing counter, empty tray in hand.
Victor licks his lips and pats his breast pocket like he won some award.
“Dude,” I chuckle, slapping his forearm. “Oh my God p>
He shrugs. “I love smooth ladies who know what they want and grab it p>
I laugh, but his words make my smile fade a little, reminding me of someone like that. Fierce. Bold. Able to take whatever she wants.
I’m sad that I’m not what she wants.
“So, Asher,” Victor’s voice pulls me out of my thoughts. “I have the information you need about this guy you call Dominic Davidson. It’s right here p>
He lifts a brown file and extends it toward me, but when I reach for it, he pulls it back briefly.
“Asher, so you know, you might not like what you’re about to see p>
I gulp and let out a silent exhale. “Guess I’ll have to find out first p>
I take the file from him. It takes me a few seconds of steady breathing before I finally open it.
I nearly choke on the air in my throat when the bloody picture of a naked dead woman stares back at me.
“Victor, what is… what is this?” I stammer, my wild eyes darting between him and the gory image in front of me.
“I told you it was going to be a shocker,” he says evenly. I watch him take a sip of his cappuccino before setting the cup back down on the table. “First of all, let me start by telling you his name is not Dominic Davidson p>
“What?!” I try my best not to shout.
“Yes, Asher. In fact, the guy has gone by twelve to twenty different names in the past eight years. Let me save you the long details by summarizing the p>
whole horror story is laid out for me. Victor adds, “You can go through the documents later at your leisure, back home p>

Victor takes another long sip of his cappuccino and sets the cup down. He leans closer across the table, clearing his throat.
“So, Asher, the real name of this Dominic guy is Kai Jones. He makes a business out of marrying pretty career women who are filthy rich. Once he’s married to them, he somehow convinces them to transfer everything they own into his name. And when I say everything, I mean EVERYTHING—money, properties, assets, you name it. Once the transfer is complete, he finishes them off to cover his tracks before moving on to his next target p>
My head is pounding. My ears are buzzing. What the fuck am I could hearing right now p>
“Also, there is no financial corporation named FlutterCoin Exchange. Asher, he made up that shitty lie to boost his chances of getting into those women’s panties as fast as he could.” Victor leans back in his seat.
It takes me a full minute to find my voice. “So, Victor,” I manage to croak out, “does this mean we’re dealing with a bloody fraudster p>
“Yeah, Asher.” He nods, settling deeper into his chair. “You’re dealing with a fucking fraudster who has no conscience and no interest in honest work. He should be arrested, tried in court, and thrown in jail to rot—just like the women he left rotting in bushes and abandoned warehouses p>
Hot tears sting my eyes. Oh my God, Isla! What have you gotten yourself into p>
I jolt to my feet, suddenly thankful I brought my car.
“Where are you going, Asher?” Victor asks, rising with me.
“I need to save someone from him right now. Fuck! I should have known that guy was up to no good p>
Victor shoves his chair back. “Hey, I’m coming with you. Let me run over and pay for our coffees,” he says, pointing toward the counter.
“Alright, Victor. I’ll be in the car.” I turn to leave, then snap back to clutch his arm. “Victor, I’m begging you—don’t waste our time flirting with that waitress when you go pay. I’m serious p>
Victor chuckles. “I don’t need to flirt with her.” He pats his breast pocket. “She’s already done the job p>
I let out a sharp breath and release his arm. As he heads toward the counter, I take a quick gulp of my caffè latte before setting the cup back on the table.
So much for enjoying my coffee. I turn and dash out of the café. My strides are fast as I reach my car and climb in. After tossing the file onto the backseat, I start the ignition.
Just as the engine roars to life, Victor comes running out of the café and straight toward my car. He yanks open the passenger door, jumps in, and slams it shut.
I pull out of the parking lot as quickly as I can and, within seconds, I’m on the road—racing to the only place echoing in my chaotic mind right now.
