I force a big ridiculous smile on my face, not feeling like saying anything. My mom hugs me and gives me a light peck on my left cheek.
“Alright, big boy.” She dusts off my shoulders. “Take care of yourself. I love you p>

I know she gets on my nerves sometimes, but I still love her.
She hugs me again before turning to Isla, Sandra, and Ethan. She hugs them too before she leaves. At the door, she waves at us before disappearing outside into the black G-Wagon she drove here in. We all stand at the open doorway and watch her pull out of the compound. Seconds later, the car zooms off, definitely on its way to the airport.
I sigh and plop down on the mahogany chair beside me.
“Your mum is still so intense, Asher,” Sandra blurts, hissing through her teeth.
“I nearly peed my pants, dude,” Ethan adds.
Isla simply laughs. “Come on, guys. We all know how Aunt Caroline is. But damn, she still looks so young and fresh and p>
“Ok, everyone,” I cut in, knowing where that conversation is heading. “Please, let us not stretch it. She is gone, and I do not have the strength to listen to the speech about my mum being a sexy immortal vampire p>
They laugh. I nearly join them, but I am feeling thirsty. I stand up from the chair. “Excuse me, guys, I need to get myself some water from the kitchen p>
I am about to turn around when Ethan’s voice announces, “Guys, Sandra and I want to leave. There is this new karaoke place in town we want to go to. Do you guys want to come p>
“I am suspecting this is a date between you and Sandra only,” Isla answers, folding her arms. “So go and have fun p>
Ethan masks a smile and wraps his arms around Sandra’s waist. “You are right, Isla. It is our date. We wanted to, you know, tell you and Asher.” He shrugs.
Sandra pecks his lips and turns to Isla and me. “Alright, guys, we are going. Bye p>
She waves happily at us before following Ethan to his car. They both get in, close their doors, and within seconds they are already driving out of my house, zooming off down the street.
Those two are so voracious. So much oppression.
With them gone, I finally turn around and walk back into the house to get myself a bottle of water, leaving Isla at the entrance.
To be honest, ever since I came back from the hospital, being around Isla has felt like a guessing game of chess. Sometimes it also feels like we are trying to avoid each other. Whenever we are alone, there is always this heavy tension in the air. That tension, coupled with a silence so thick it makes my stomach churn, is unbearable.
