Chapter 27
Step –Taboo
AMANDA’S POV:

Xavier and I landed on the floor with me sprawled right on top of him. Like, literally on top of him. My face was in his chest, and the awkwardness hit me faster than my mom bailing on me for her honeymoon.
I froze for a second, barely breathing, and when I finally dared to look up, he was staring at me. I’m not saying anything. Just… staring. I could feel his hardness pressed tightly to my crotch. I swallowed as my eyes landed on his mouth and flashbacks of him kissing me flooded in.
I watch him swallow and licked his lips as his eyes were glued to me.
I scrambled to get off him, my cheeks burning. Of course, I just had to embarrass myself on our first day together. “Oh my God, I’m so sorry! I didn’t mean to p>
“It’s fine,” Xavier said, brushing himself off as he stood up. He didn’t even seem fazed, which somehow made it worse. Like, how was he so calm when I was literally dying inside? “Just… be careful next time p>
“Yeah, totally. Careful. Got it.” I nodded like an idiot, probably looking like a huge red tomato.
He glanced at me briefly, then walked to the door. “Breakfast is in 30 minutes. Don’t be late p>
“Okay,” I mumbled, shutting the door behind him as he left.
Once he was gone, I finally exhaled and flopped onto the bed. The room was; like, ridiculously nice. Honestly, it was way too nice for me. But at the same time, it felt… right. Like it was made for me.
I grabbed my phone and opened Shawn’s chat.
Me: Mom’s on her honeymoon. Again.
My mom had been married once after my dad, but the idiot bailed after staying with her for a month, and we’ll she moved on pretty quickly. She’d left me to go on her honeymoon with him then, so Shawn and I were pretty much not surprised.
Shawn: Bruh. She left you? Again p>
Me: Yeah. I’m staying with my step–uncle for the week.
Shawn: That dude chill or nah?
Me: He’s fine.
Honestly, Xavier was fine. I mean, he didn’t talk much, but he wasn’t, like, weird or anything. Plus, I got to see him every day for a week, and I wasn’t complaining about that.
Exactly 30 minutes later, I grabbed my bag and headed out to find breakfast. The house was huge, though, and I‘ got totally lost trying to find the dining room. I ended up wandering around for way longer than I should have, opening random doors and hoping for the best.
When I finally found it, Xavier was already there, setting the table.
“Need help?” I asked, standing awkwardly in the doorway.
He shook his head without looking up. “No, just sit. It’s ready p>
I did as he said, sliding into one of the chairs. The food smelled amazing, eggs, bacon, toast, the whole deal. I

hadn’t realized how hungry I was until I saw it.
“Thanks,” I said as I started eating.

Xavier sat across from me, his plate already half–empty. We ate in silence, and I couldn’t tell if it was awkward or just… normal. He wasn’t exactly a talker, but it wasn’t like I felt uncomfortable. It was just quiet.
After a few bites, I cleared my throat. “Uh, do you think you could give me a ride to school p>
“Sure,” he said without hesitation.
That surprised me a little. I mean, he didn’t have to say yes, but he did. Or maybe his company is on the way, so he decided to help, and it’s nothing special.
When we finished eating, I grabbed my bag, and we headed out to his car. A different car from this morning. I slid into the passenger seat, feeling like I didn’t belong there at all. It looked fucking expensive.
The drive to school was… well, quiet. Again. I kept sneaking glances at him, but he was totally focused on the road. I didn’t want to be weird and start rambling, so I just stared out the window and tried not to overthink everything.
When we pulled up in front of the school, he stopped the car and looked at me. “Have a good day p>
“Thanks,” I said, reaching for the door handle.
“Wait,” he said, stopping me.
I froze, turning back to him. “Yeah?” Was he going to kiss me again?
“Do you need a ride home?” he asked, making me pause.
“Oh, uh… yeah. That’d be great,” I said, caught off guard.
He nodded. “I’ll be here after school p>
“Cool. Thanks,” I said, smiling a little as I got out of the car.
But as soon as I stepped onto the sidewalk, my smile faded. Because, of course, the universe had to ruin my morning.
“Kyle,” I muttered under my breath as I bumped into him.
Of all the people to run into, it had to be him. The last person I wanted to see this morning.
“Amanda,” he said, his fake smile plastered across his face.
“You have a class today?” I asked, already annoyed.
“No, but I was just curious,” he said, his tone changing, “Who dropped you off p>
I raised an eyebrow. “None of your business p>
“Come on, Amanda. Don’t be like that,” he said, stepping in front of me as I tried to walk away. “I’m just asking.
“Yeah, well, I’m just not answering,” I shot back, crossing my arms.
Kyle’s smile faltered for a second, but he quickly recovered. “Whatever. You don’t have to be so defensive p>
“I’m not defensive,” I said, rolling my eyes. “I just don’t owe you an explanation p>

“Okay, okay, that’s fine but can I ask you something?” He said, while biting his lips and I nodded. What did he want to ask? Fuck, I hoped he wouldn’t ask me to be his girlfriend.
