Chapter 108
(MILES)
Fifteen minutes later, the fever breaks.
The feverish lust fades as my knot slips out of Arlo’s body. I feel weak and foolish, probably because I have never experienced an alpha rut before. My brain is still groggy, and my muscles mush. The fact that I lost complete control with Arlo mortifies me.
I claimed him.
Panic courses through me, and I squeeze my eyes shut. What we just did with each other was a fucking disaster. I have no idea where or how to begin to fix it. I can’t claim Arlo. The kid wants to kill Sasha. And even if he wasn’t driven by some sick murderous vendetta, I have no desire to claim an omega now. Hell, I don’t want a kid right now. And even if I secretly wanted that, Arlo would be the last omega I’d pick. He is too sassy. Too obnoxious. Too mouthy.
He is hell-bent on murdering my best friend.
I wonder if this is some sort of a trap to get through to Sasha. Could Arlo really be that devious? Was all that just an act? Or was I the only one completely consumed by the moment? The thoughts crossing my mind make me paranoid as I lie there with Arlo in my arms. Could it be possible that this became too real for him and now he’s about to start being clingy and needy?
Arlo suddenly hauls off and gives me a mighty chest punch that jogs me off of my thoughts. I frown and stare at him as he climbs down the bed, grabs his jeans from the floor and slams into the bathroom. I too get off the bed and dress up quickly then sit on the edge of the bed, waiting for him to come out of the bathroom.
I gently rub the spot on my chest where he hit. What was that for? Fifteen minutes have barely passed since he begged me to fuck him and bite him. Is he going to pretend he didn’t want what just happened between us?
He walks out of the bathroom about five minutes later. There’s a piece of tissue paper stuck at the bite spot on his neck. His face looks pale as he quickly slips into his jeans. His hands are trembling and he won’t look at me. It’s obvious now that he is upset about what happened between us, and wasn’t just doing it for the sake of trapping Sasha.
“Arlo p>
“Save it. What’s done is done.” He snaps.
“Look, you’re probably p>
“Pregnant? Yes…yes, I know. We should probably get back to the city for so many reasons. At least so I can get a morning-after pill p>
The realization that he is at least trying to get ahead of the problem relieves me. “Whatever happened…was…was a mistake.” I stutter gruffly. “You went into heat and I lost complete control of myself p>
“I’m well aware of what happened.” He says.” We both lost control. Now can we please stop talking about it? It’s not like it was the first time we fucked each other p>
I scowl. He is trying to downplay what happened. “Yeah, I know. But this is different. I bit you p>
“You think I don’t know that?” he reaches for the tissue on his neck and rips it off. He winces, balling the tissue in his fist. ” Look I cant worry about that now. I’ll figure it out and handle the pregnancy later, in case it is there.” He gets up and leaves the room through the backdoor of the kitchen.
I head to the bathroom, use the restroom and follow him out back. I find him behind a small structure. I notice an open capot at the back of the lot. There are tyres piled inside it, along with some rusted barrels. Arlo tinkers with some dirt bikes as I approach him.
“You think this runs?” I ask, crouching beside him.
“At the moment, no.” He pokes on a thin wire hanging loose. “Looks like this wire came from the stator. This bike must have tons of other issues as well p>
“You know a lot about dirt bikes?” I scowl.
“I’ve been interested in them since I was little. My father wouldn’t just let me near them. U still watch stuff about them online though p>
“Huh p>
Arlo doesn’t seem like the type of guy who would be interested in dirt bikes. He is such a refined person. He doesn’t look like someone who’d want to get grime under his perfectly polished nails. “Can you fix it and get it running p>
He frowns and stands. “Like I told you, I have never owned a bike before. I don’t know p>
“So then, can you try and fix it?” I study his tense face.
He sighs exasperatedly. “I don’t know, Miles. I want to get out of here just as much as you do. I just don’t think my knowledge is hands-on p>
“Well, you can try, right p>
He rakes his fingers through his hair, looking unsure. “Maybe. I just don’t have to. And I don’t see any lying around p>
“What do you need? I can check around p>
“maybe a screwdriver p>
“Okay.” I nod. “Would a knife do? I saw one in the house. The one that I used to open the soup yesterday p>
“I guess.” He bites his lip. “I could try and use that p>
“We will have to hitchhike across the mountain if you don’t manage to fix the bike. And that will take an eternity.” I graze my fingers on the rusty handle of the dirt bike. “Dalton’s men are probably on the lookout for us now. Sneaking past the mountains undiscovered back to the city will be a hard task p>
“No. He will probably make the men watch the roads. He cannot risk letting us get back into the city, he’ll be watching us for sure p>
“Of course. He can’t afford to tell your people that he tried to kill you and failed. That would mean a death sentence to him. The alphas he was with are dead so that probably means he brought in new ones. He didn’t want many of his men to know what he was up to. But catching us will probably trump that. He won’t let us survive p>
“No.” He whispers. “Dalton will stop at nothing to prevent us from. Going back to the city p>
My nails rasp against a stubble as I rub my jaw. “actually, we don’t have to get back to the city. All we need to do is get a phone p>
“There’s a payphone halfway down the mountain at the gas station p>
“Really? Then let’s do whatever we can to get out of here asap. Wait here, I’ll go get the knife p>
I hurry back to the cabin and go inside. I grab the said knife from the counter and turn to leave but as I do that, I catch some movement outside. My heart dips when I see a black SUV drive up the long dirt road leading to the cabin.
“Shit.” I hiss. This isn’t the kind of SUV you see in the mountains often. It’s way too clean and has quite expensive rims. Every instinct in me screams that it is Dalton’s men.
