I hadn’t slept much when I was in the detention center. Now that I was back home, I could finally be completely at ease. I was even able to sleep that night without taking any sleeping pills.
I wasn’t sure how long I had been asleep. Suddenly, I was rudely awakened by the banging on my door. Before I could even open my eyes, I heard Mom’s angry voice outside.
Given what had happened, it was expected that she would come looking for me. So, it didn’t surprise me.
I intentionally took my time getting dressed. Mom’s temper was starting to flare as she continued banging on the door. She had been doing so for quite some time yet I hadn’t answered the door.
Just as she was about to bang harder, I finally opened it.
“Were you dead or something? What took you so long to answer the door? I’ve been knocking for ages!” she yelled.
I glanced coolly at her. “I know you very badly want to see me dead. But too bad, I’m still alive. Otherwise, I wouldn’t be able to answer the door.”
Mom was furious. “Who says I want to see you dead? It’s no wonder we’re more fond of Lianne. Listen to what you’ve just said! And look at your behavior! Who would like you? How could anyone possibly like you when you’re like this!”
She added, not mincing her words. “We’re your family. Yet, we don’t like you. Even your beloved husband despises you. Can’t you reflect on yourself? Stop blaming everyone else!
“How dare you accuse your father and Lianne of framing you! Why would they ever do such a thing? What could they possibly gain from doing so!”
I wanted to know the answers to her questions too. Why would Dad and Julianne treat me this way? Especially Dad. Why would he treat his own daughter like this? What would he gain from it?
I understood the concept of hurting someone for personal gain. However, I couldn’t wrap my head around hurting someone for no apparent gain.
I didn’t respond to anything Mom said, which only infuriated her more. She was about to step forward and hit me. However, Jeremy stopped her.
“Don’t forget why we’re here, Mom,” he reminded her.
Thinking about Dad in the detention center, she squashed her rage.
“Listen here, Millicent.” She began talking again. “You are to go to the detention center immediately. Once you’re there, tell the officers your father had no intentions of harming you. Tell them you took the drug voluntarily as part of his experiment. You will tell them all of this so that they will release him!”
Then, she started lecturing me. “You know your father has high blood pressure. You also know he cares greatly about his image. How can you let him remain in the detention center? Are you trying to kill him? He’s your father for goodness sake!”
Mom spoke as though I owned the police station. She thought the police would just obey everything I said.
I couldn’t help but burst into laughter.
“You think too highly of me, Mom,” I replied once I had stopped laughing. “If I had the power to make the police do whatever I wanted, I wouldn’t have had to stay in the detention center for so many days.”
“Why did you drag your father into this then? Are you trying to lead him to an early grave?” she retorted.

As mentioned, it had become a habit for her to blame me for everything. Likewise, I had also become accustomed to being blamed. Thus, I no longer felt hurt or upset.
I merely wanted to make things plain with her so that she would stop nagging me. “I didn’t drag him into this. He tried to frame me! He also broke the law! That’s why he’s been arrested!”
“Stop spouting nonsense!” she scolded. “How could he frame you? You’re his daughter! Putting that aside, do you think he even has the guts to do that? If he did, he would be swimming in wealth by now!”
I was speechless.
I couldn’t really argue with what she had said. Dad wasn’t a saint, but he was a coward.
He had studied pharmacology because he enjoyed researching and developing drugs. However, the type of drugs he was interested in weren’t ones that benefited human health. Instead, his interests were in ones that were detrimental to humans.
The Abyde drug he had administered to me was one such example. He also had a drug that could make someone bald in a short amount of time. He was also trying to develop a drug that would kill someone in the shortest time possible…
The list went on.
If these were medieval times, he would be exalted as a talented poison maker. However, these were modern times. As such, drugs like these would never be allowed to surface.
There was a huge demand for such drugs on the black market. Hence, Dad would be rich if he had the guts to sell these drugs there. This was what she was implying.
