pulled the child out of the car. Picking him up, I was about to move away from the wreckage.
Irvin had just placed the pregnant woman on the ground. When I turned, I saw him running toward me, his eyes burning with pure rage.
Before I could react, he lunged toward us. We rolled away from the car wrapped in his arms and came to a stop facing away from it. Irvin was shielding us with his broad frame.
Then, there was a deafening bang. The car had exploded! It was immediately engulfed in flames.
The sound of the explosion and the raging fire triggered a flood of memories in my mind.
I flashed back to the beginning of my sophomore year. I was working on an experiment in the university lab when one of the juniors mishandled a substance. This caused an explosion, which created a huge fire.
The explosion had knocked over a cabinet, which fell on top of me. Trapped underneath it, I was unable to move. I could only watch as the flames crept closer. I thought I was going to be burned alive right there and then.
However, Irvin suddenly appeared. Like a hero swooping in, he had rescued me from that dire situation.
After the incident had passed, I heard people talking about his swift action. When the explosion happened, everyone else had been running for their life. At the time, he was the only one who knew I was at the back of the lab.
Apparently, he had risked his life and rushed inside. No one had been able to stop him.
Right now, he was just like the man he was back then. He had recklessly dashed toward me without hesitation and protected me with his own body.
Fortunately, the impact of the explosion wasn’t too strong. We had also managed to put some distance between ourselves and the car before it went up in flames. That being said, some debris from the explosion still hit Irvin’s back.
During the lab explosion in my sophomore year, he had born the full weight of a collapsed wooden beam to save me. Because of this, his back suffered severe burns. He had to stay in the hospital for over a month before he recovered.
However, his current self was more terrified than he had been back then. I could tell from how tightly he was holding me. It was as though he feared he would have lost me if he had acted just a second later.
He continued to hold me tightly for a long while. Once his fear faded, it turned into fury.
“Everyone else is smart enough to avoid dangerous situations. Yet, why do you always rush straight into them like an idiot?” he yelled at me.
His words struck a memory. I had saved him from drowning in the sea two years ago. I had ended up miscarrying due to physical overexertion that day. He had yelled at me and called me a reckless idiot then too.
Recalling how he had reacted made me think he was likely feeling the same way right now as he did back then. He was yelling at me because he was worried.
I felt conflicted by this thought.
The police and ambulance soon arrived at the scene.
I wasn’t injured, but I was preoccupied with my conflicting feelings. Thus, I was standing quietly with a blank expression on my face.
Irvin became concerned when he noticed. And although I was fine, he insisted on taking me to the hospital
He picked me up and was about to get into his car. That was when Julianne—who had remained in the same place he had left her -suddenly wobbled on her feet and collapsed onto the ground.
She looked at him with a pitiful and frail expression. “My stomach suddenly hurts a lot, Irvin. I feel like I’m dying…”

Usually, Irvin would immediately cast me aside and rush to her if she was in even the slightest bit of discomfort. But this time, he didn’t.
