“Stop. Your apologies sound cheap,” I quickly cut him off. “If you’re truly sorry, then just divorce me already!”
There was nothing else I wished to discuss with him at this point. The only thing I wanted from him was a divorce.
The coldness in my gaze made Irvin’s heart tightened. Just like that, he was once again overwhelmed and suffocated by the familiar pain.
He continued staring at me. His eyes reddened even more as more tears welled until they finally overflowed.
“I’m sorry… I’m truly sorry, Emi…” he pathetically started apologizing again.
Irvin had retained his memories from the hearing after regaining consciousness. Images of me being fished out of the water by the police and my body covered in various tubes as I lay on the hospital bed haunted him.
He remembered how he had squeezed my injured arm and questioned me about where I had gotten the scar. He also remembered how he had accused me of wasting medical resources.
These memories were now like knives brutally stabbing his heart. The pain was unbearable.
Although Irvin knew it was futile to apologize, it was the only thing he could do.
I could tell he was suffering, and I could feel he finally realized just how much he had wronged me.

Just as I was to put a stop to his apologies again, he said something else.
“I know no amount of apologizing will be able to make up for all the pain I’ve inflicted on you. And I also know I don’t have the right to ask for your forgiveness. So, the only thing I can do now is give you whatever you want.”

“I know what you’re thinking, Emi. I know you won’t believe me, but I’ll still say it anyway–I never intended to hurt you,” he declared.
He admitted he had been foolish. He had been so blinded by his psychological trauma that he had acted like the biggest fool in the world. However, he never intentionally thought of hurting me, and that was the truth.
I scoffed at his words. “Really? What about when you kidnapped me to trade me for Julianne? Are you sure you weren’t trying to hurt me? You of all people should know I would have died on that snowy mountain if I hadn’t been so lucky.”
