Staring at the divorce certificate in my hand, I was momentarily dazed.
Irvin’s eyes, however, were red with unshed tears. Even though he never truly wanted to give up on our marriage, he was just letting go temporarily in hopes of a better future.
Even so, when we got married, he had never once thought about divorce. He always believed we would grow old together.
Who would have thought that in just four years, we had ended up here?
His heart ached unbearably, and he felt as if he couldn’t breathe. But he didn’t let it show. He knew I wouldn’t feel bad for him right now.
As we walked out of the courthouse, the gloomy sky began to snow heavily.
The snow this year felt heavier than usual. There was a saying that snow signified a good year. I took it as a good
omen.
Just as I was about to walk toward my car, Irvin suddenly called my name.
Instinctively, I turned around.
He stood there in the snow, his black coat billowing in the wind. His already pale complexion looked even paler, his body weakened from all the struggles recently.
He looked so fragile. It was hard not to feel bad for him. Especially with his reddened, teary eyes right now. He looked so broken it was heartbreaking.
“Emi, I’m really sorry,” he said.
Even though he knew there was no use in apologizing, he couldn’t help but say it. He had truly been wrong. He deserved this.
Perhaps because this would be the last time we see each other, I wasn’t as disgusted by his apology as before. I even had a strong urge to walk up to him, to hug him, to make him happier and less guilty.
But as soon as I snapped out of the thought and realized what I was thinking, I shivered. Loving someone too much could be terrifying. Even after forgetting him, my heart continued to ache for him involuntarily.
The more I thought about it, the scarier it became. So, I responded coldly, “If you really feel sorry, then please avoid me whenever you see me in the future.”

I wiped away my tears.
Even though I had snapped out of it and regained control, I still couldn’t stop myself from turning around.
