Lhadn’t even taken my exam, and I already promised to buy two meals.
Noah insisted on accompanying me to the exam center after we finished eating. He claimed he had nothing to do at home, so I agreed.
We soon arrived at the exam center. Once we alighted from the car, I told him to find a café and wait for me there. I would call him once I was done with the exam.
As soon as I finished speaking, someone else butted into our conversation.
“Exam? No way, Emilia! Don’t tell me you’re talking about the exam for grad school? Why would someone like you even try getting into one?” said a female voice.
I turned toward the direction of the voice with my brow furrowed. It belonged to Lily’s mother, Susan Walter.
I involuntarily grimaced as I recalled our last encounter. She had incessantly tried to set me up with that nephew of hers–I think he had a Ph.D.
“No offense, Emilia, but aren’t you too old for that?” Susan asked without waiting for a response. “Why are you trying to get into grad school when you’re almost 30? Plus, you don’t even make a good housewife, so won’t it just be a waste of time to take the exam?
“And even if you do get in, how old will you be by the time you graduate? Honestly, I think you’re better off finding someone to marry while you still have your youth, and you better do it quickly!
“I know you regret not taking me up on my offer to introduce you to my nephew previously. But considering we’re family, I’m still willing to give you another chance! Divorced women in their 30s like you have such a hard time finding a good match. Take my word for it, and stop being picky!”
I stared wordlessly at her as she rambled on.
While numbers could be rounded off, age didn’t work that way. I was only 26 and in the prime of my youth, and yet she was saying I was in my 30s!
“I’m telling you, my nephew is a catch! Look at him–he’s so well–groomed and handsome. Plus, he holds two Ph.Ds! You won’t find a better man than him! If I didn’t know you–No, if it weren’t for the fact that we’re family, I wouldn’t even offer to introduce him to you!” she exclaimed haughtily.
Susan probably heard from Lily that I had benefited substantially from the divorce settlement. This was why she was trying to latch on to me and insisted I meet her nephew despite constantly putting me down.
She was praising him so highly, claiming he was brilliant and handsome. Hence, I thought he was probab‘ dead gorgeous .
Yet, I was at a loss for words when I saw his picture. He wasn’t good–looking at all.
“Why, tons of young women are interested in him right now. So, Emilia, you better-” Susan was about to start jabbering again.

However, Noah stepped between us and interrupted her. “ Then why don’t you tell your nephew to choose one of them since he has so many options? Better tell him to be quick about it. It’ll be too late if he waits until those ladies regain their eyesight because none of them will want him anymore.”
He could really be sharp–tongued sometimes.

Before Susan could process what Noah meant, I was already waving goodbye to him and walking toward the exam hall.
Irvin and Landon sat in a black car parked by the side of the road near the exam center. They watched as I made my way to it.
Irvin waited until my back was turned to them before rolling down his window. He wanted to get a clearer view of my retreating figure.
He was waiting until he was done handling Julianne’s situation. Once he was, he would cut ties with her for good, and there wouldn’t be any more obstacles between us. Then he could fully and wholeheartedly focus on making things up to me.
Landon felt conflicted when he saw how greedy Irvin’s gaze was.
Who would have imagined things would turn out this way?
Irvin had been so disdainful toward me before. Yet now, he was desperately pining for me when I didn’t even want
him anymore.
Plus, now that Landon knew how grave my injuries had been , he felt Irvin was indeed in the wrong. That being said, it didn’t matter how badly Irvin had wronged me. Irvin still shouldn’t have given me his entire fortune.
Hence, Landon couldn’t hold back from saying, “Look at that punk over there, Irvin! He definitely has feelings for Emilia!”
