In fact, he still seemed like the better–looking one, even when compared with Noah’s uncle. This was especially so when Irvin was well–dressed because he poked so attractive that it was hard to focus on anything else.
The whole world seemed to brighten when he smiled. However, now that his brilliant smile had suddenly disappeared, the world seemed duller. It was enough to make one’s heart ache.
There was a saying online that good–looking people could never sin. No matter what they did wrong, their faces were enough to make one’s mind go blank. Hence, it was advised to avoid falling in love with someone who was too good–looking.
My heart ached involuntarily when I saw the happy look on his face shatter and his smile vanish. Perhaps it was because I had been vividly dreaming of our past affection these past few days after being hypnotized.
Irvin handed me the flowers.
Then, he laughed bitterly and said, “You know, don’t you?”
“Yes,” I replied evenly. “Don’t ever try to hypnotize me again or do anything of the sort, Irvin. Our divorce agreement didn’t specify that I couldn’t sell the company shares. So, if you pull something like this again, I’ll sell both companies‘ shares and sever all ties with you.”
Our divorce agreement specified I had to retain him as the CEO as long as he continued to bring in profit. However, it didn’t mention that I couldn’t sell the company.
Tears welled up in Irvin’s eyes when he realized how resolute I was.
“Please don’t do this, Emi. I know I’m so terribly at fault that I don’t deserve your forgiveness. But please don’t make things harder for yourself. I’m sure you’ve seen how the company’s value has almost doubled with all the effort I’ve put in over the past six months.”
What Irvin said was true, but I didn’t acknowledge his statement.
Irvin had always been a business genius. When he decided to use the company’s profits to get me to stay, he focused his all on running it. Thus, he was now even more formidable than before.
Originally, his brilliant exit strategy involved leaving behind the problematic Sawyer Corporation and entirely focusing on running his new company. However, he didn’t do so.
To significantly boost profits, Irvin somehow managed to kick out the useless and troublesome shareholders of Sawyer Corporation. Then, he arranged for both companies to begin sharing resources. This was how he managed to almost double my net worth in just over half a year.
“You know your research burns through a lot of money, Emi,” he said. “You’ll be able to get by for a few years if you sell both companies, but what happens after that?”
He continued, “And what about the companies‘ numerous employees? They’ll all become jobless if you do so. How many families do you think will be able to survive that?”

I didn’t respond, but I knew he wasn’t trying to intimidate me with his words. The economy wasn’t doing well , so the news often had stories of struggling couples. Many had been unable to pay their Hrortgage after losing their jobs and had difficulty surviving.
If I sold both companies, there would inevitably be an internal restructuring. Because of this, many employees and their families would undoubtedly be affected.”
So, honestly, he didn’t even need to say any of that. I had never actually intended to sell the companies. If I had, I wouldn’t be discussing it with him right now–I would’ve done it already.
So, with a sigh, I said, “I know all that, Irvin, but you know I’m at a critical stage in my research. If I get hypnotized again, I won’t be able to think clearly. And you know how much I care about my research.
“How can I focus on anything else with you cornering me? Plus, if my research fails, what future will be left for me?”
Irvin went silent for a moment.
Then, he sincerely said, “I’m sorry, Emi. I was only concerned that you would keep forgetting me if your memory loss continued. I didn’t consider this.”
