In this world, many mothers didn’t love their children, and oftentimes, it was without reason. However, these mothers usually only loved themselves and not anyone else, let alone someone else’s child.
So, when a mother only loved her adopted daughter and not her biological one, there had to be a reason behind it.
Mom answered William’s question in a dazed state. William had encountered many strange things in life, but her answer still rendered him speechless.
That same evening, I had given Grandma a sponge bath and watched her until she fell asleep.
I was about to go over some data when I received a message from William, saying he was in the hospital’s garden.
Figuring he had gotten the information he needed, I grabbed my down jacket and rushed downstairs. I was anxious to know what William had learned.
As soon as I saw him, I asked, “What did my father say? Did he conduct any drug trials on Julianne? ”
William stared at me but didn’t immediately answer. There was a hint of pity in his usually unreadable gaze.
He understood human nature well, so he knew people craved what they lacked most in life. Hence, he knew I desperately wanted parental love because I didn’t receive any from my parents.
Reaching for my head, William gently patted it. “Don’t be concerned about your parents from now on. They’re not worth it.”
I was stunned. I didn’t understand why he had suddenly said that instead of talking about Julianne.
“You’ve always wondered, haven’t you–why your mother loves Julianne over you, even though Julianne was adopted?” he probed.
It had been a long time since I had any expectations of my parents, so nothing they did could ever hurt me anymore. Despite this, I honestly still wanted to know why Mom treated me so.
After all, compared to men, women had to go through the pain of carrying a child for nine months. Thus, women tended to cherish and love their children more.
So, naturally, my response was, “Why? What about it?”
“Your parents adopted Julianne because they were college mates with her parents. And when they were all in college, your father liked Julianne’s mother, while your mother liked Julianne’s father,” William explained.
I was speechless.
“The reason your mother hates you so much is because of something Julianne told her. After Julianne found out your mother had feelings for her father, she told your mother that her parents were in a car accident because of you,” he continued.
“What!” I exclaimed in shock.
I didn’t know a thing about Julianne’s family before she joined my family. So, how could her parents‘ car accident possibly be connected to me?
William continued, “Julianne told your mother her parents were out running errands for Irvin on the day they got into the accident. Once they had finished the errands, they wanted to buy a slice of cake for her.
“So, her parents went to her favorite cake shop to buy the mango cheesecake she loved. However, you bought the last slice. Because of this, her parents had to go to a different shop and got into a car accident on the way.
“Your mother still secretly loved Julianne’s father. She had always believed the man she dearly loved would still be alive if you hadn’t bought that last slice of cake. Your mother hated you after learning the so–called truth. It was also why she began to favor Julianne over you,” he finished.

“Your mother has always been partial to your brother since you were both young,” William added. “While it’s partly because she favored a son over a daughter, the main reason is what Julianne’s father had said to her.
“One day, when she was out shopping with you, she coincidentally ran into him. He told her he could finally be at ease now that he saw she had a family and was living well with your father.”
