I had decided to give Irvin one last chance when we were in Falveria. If he had said this to me with equal conviction back then, we would probably be at home right now, happily wrapped up in each other’s arms.
However, he hadn’t.
Every time I had given him another chance, he had squandered it. Met , he always came back begging for another. How many chances was I supposed to give him?
Irvin mistook my silence as a sign that I was caving. So, with a pitiful expression, he held my arms and said, “ I really know I’m wrong this time, babe. And I can truly make it right! So, believe me–just this once . Please believe me. Just one last time, okay?”
I studied him again. I took in the apologetic look on his face and the way he was childishly whining. I took in how he was looking at me with the same expression I always couldn’t resist.
I still felt like caving into his demands, except I could control that urge now. So, I stared at Irvin with a gaze that was colder than the dead of winter.
“I’ve already given you plenty of chances, Irvin,” I said. “Now, there’s nothing left for me to give. I hope you’ll stop clinging to me like this, or else we’ll both go down together!”
“Babe”
Irvin was about to speak when his phone rang. He wanted to reject the call, but when he saw who was calling, he didn’t.
I don’t know what the person on the other end said, but after ending the call, Irvin looked at me deeply.
“I know I’ve made terrible mistakes, babe, but please trust me! Just trust me one last time! I promise I can give you everything you’ve asked for! Please, wait for me. Just wait until I have everything in my hands!”
With that, he rushed away.
I stared after his retreating figure. Not only did I have no intention of waiting for him , but it made my decision firmer. Gideon, it was–I was going to marry Gideon as soon as possible. And by the time Irvin was done with whatever he was busy with, Gideon and I would already be husband and wife. By then, nothing Irvin said would matter anymore.
In this world, no one would stay in the same place waiting forever.
I also wasn’t afraid Irvin might try and come after me. I had proof that he wasn’t Timothy Hardwell, after all. So, if he ever lost it and used the power of the Hardwells against me, I would simply go public with the truth.
When that happened, we would both go down together. I would even team up with William and take the entire Hardwell family
down.
With this in mind, I drove home.
Since finding out Irvin was still alive, I hadn’t suffered from insomnia. But tonight, after I had washed up and lay down in bed , I couldn’t fall asleep. I tossed and turned. I even tried counting sheep, but it was useless. So, eventually, I took two sleeping pills.
I knew why I couldn’t sleep, but it didn’t change my decision to marry Gideon.
I had to put a swift end to my messy relationship with Irvin. It was time to cut myself free from this complicated entanglement once and for all–no more agonizing, and no more wavering.
Even after taking the sleeping pills, my sleep that night was restless. I dreamt the entire night.
First, it was about all the beautiful memories I had shared with Irvin . Next, it was about all the hurt he had inflicted on me. Then suddenly, I dreamt about him going mad after finding out I had remarried. It was the kind of madness I couldn’t handle.
I knew that in reality, if Irvin were to find out I married Gideon, he would react even worse than in my dream.

But even so, the first thing I did after waking up was call Gideon and tell him of my decision. If he had already thought it through and still wanted to marry me, then he should come find me–and bring his ID along. We would go to city hall to get our marriage certificate today.
Gideon merely told me to wait for him before hanging up. As I stared at my phone, I thought about how I would be registering, my marriage with Gideon in just a short while. I couldn’t help but feel a little shaken inside.
I had never imagined that I would one day get married just for necessity. I also had no idea how I was supposed to face Gideon once we were married.
