However, just as I was about to walk past Henry, he said, “ I can cute William’s niece.”
My steps came to an abrupt halt. Maybe it was because I cared for Noah. Or perhaps it was because I hated Julianne and wanted to bring her to justice as soon as possible. Regardless of the reason, I knew I wanted Ava to recover quickly.
Patting the space on the stone bench next to him, Henry said, “Sit down. Let’s talk.”
I didn’t respond , nor did I comply.
A thought occurred to him. Stubbing out the cigarette in his hand, e then looked at me and said, “You don’t need to be so wary of me. I’m still your biological father, so I won’t have intentions to hurt you.”
Again , I didn’t say anything in response. But I couldn’t stop myself from scoffing disbelievingly.
Offended by this, Henry couldn’t help blurting, “Besides testing my Abyde drug on you, have I done anything else to harm you?
“And you’re not the only one I’ve done my drug trials on. Your brother , mother, and even grandmother have all been my unwitting guinea pigs. You’re a researcher, so you should understand that scientific progress always comes with sacrifice! ”
Henry truly believed he’d never once done anything to hurt me, and I couldn’t even be bothered to argue with him.
So, I simply said, “What are your conditions for curing Ava?”
Despite knowing he could cure Ava, Henry hadn’t told William and earned his favor. Instead , he had told me, which obviously meant he had an agenda.
Henry still wanted to hash things out with me. However, upon seeing that I clearly had no interest in doing so , he realized it was pointless for him to press on. Thus, he dropped the topic.
“First, you have to stop going after Lianne for what she has done to you. You have a good life now, and you’re influential. So, there’s no way she’ll dare mess with you again in the future. You can honestly treat her as though she’s dead,” Henry answered.
I stayed silent for a moment before I spoke again. But I neither agreed nor rejected his first condition. Instead, I asked him, ” What are the rest? Just spit them all out.”
“You need to agree to join a research project. I only have these two conditions. If you agree to them, once we leave this place , I’ll go treat Ava immediately,” Henry replied.
My gaze flittered down before going back up. I asked, “What’s the research project you want me to join?”
Unable to resist the urge to smoke, Henry pulled out another cigarette. But then , something seemed to cross his mind, and he stored it back.
“You don’t need to know that. All you need to do is agree to my two conditions, and I’ll save Ava , ” he answered.
Before I could respond, he quickly added, “Ava is becoming more dependent on Lianne’s blood. At this rate, if the poison is neutralized from her body soon , she might not even be alive next summer.
“Think about how much William has helped you, and how good Noah has been to you. Do you really have the heart to just stand there and watch their dearest family member die?”
I studied Henry. From a young age, this man had been an absent father to me. Suddenly, I felt I had never truly known him.
My impression of Henry was that he was timid and passive. Other than developing drugs that couldn’t be put into circulation, he was useless at basically everything. Grandma and Mom also had him on a tight leash.
But now, the man before me seemed nothing like the timid, passive , and useless one I remembered.
I narrowed my eyes as I thought about Henry’s second condition. He wanted me to participate in a research project. But before I could dig deeper, he stood up.
