I found it strange and couldn’t help feeling curious about what happened with Irvin. He was an obsessive man. No matter how much I pushed him away, he would never stop coming after me. But suddenly, he went quiet after what happened that night and stopped looking for me.
Still, I didn’t try to find out why or ask Irvin anything. Whatever his reason was, the fact that he didn’t come was exactly what 1 wanted.

When I was having a meal, the fishy smell of the food made me so nauseous I had to run to the bathroom to throw up.
The housekeeper, who had cooked, immediately put down the plates she was holding and followed me. Seeing me vomit so badly that even bile came out, she became extremely worried.
“What’s going on?” she asked. “I use only the freshest ingredients when I cook.”
Since she was paid well, she really did use top–quality, organic ingredients. I shouldn’t have gotten sick from it.
I frowned too. I didn’t think it was food poisoning, either.
Usually, vomiting from food poisoning would come with stomach pain , but I didn’t have any. I hadn’t felt nauseous at all until the fish was brought to the table.
It was the smell of the fish that made me feel sick so suddenly that started vomiting.
The housekeeper also realized I had been fine until the fish came out and asked instinctively, “Ms. Quill, are you pregnant?”
Right after saying it, she quickly covered her mouth as if realizing something.
“I’m so sorry, Ms. Quill. I’m sorry, I… I…” She was so flustered that she didn’t know what to say.
She had been cooking for me for nearly two years. She knew I was single and lived a quiet, routine life. If I wasn’t in the lab, I would be at home. There was no way I would be pregnant without ever having sex.
“Maybe you have pharyngitis,” she said. “Yes. Sometimes people feel nauseous when they smell something strong or fishy, especially if their throat’s already irritated.”
She was really good at his job. Not only could she cook delicious dishes, but she also knew how to treat common health issues.
The more she thought about it, the more she believed I probably just had a sore throat and reacted to the fishy smell.
But after she asked if I was pregnant , my face slowly drained of color the more I thought about it.
Feeling nauseous from fishy smells alone wasn’t a big deal. It could indeed happen in some severe cases of pharyngitis.
But my period was over 20 days late.
Due to chronic stress at work, my cycle had always been irregular. Sometimes I would go two months without it, so I didn’t care too much about my period being late. This time was the same.
It wasn’t a big deal if I only felt nauseous from the fishy smell, or if only my period was just late. But if both of those things happened at the same time, then…
Especially considering what had happened between me and Irvin over a month ago.
I was taken away to treat a patient right after that and didn’t even make it home.
Before divorcing him and before falling off the cliff, Irvin and I had tried for over a year to have a baby, but we never succeeded. So the thought of using a contraceptive pill never even crossed my mind.
The more I thought about it, the more convinced I became that I might really be pregnant.
