After a prolonged silence, I finally found the words. “I’m sorry, Mr. Ashford. Like I said earlier, I just want to focus on my children and research moving forward. I have no interest in getting married or romance.”
William was breathtakingly handsome. When someone like him confessed so sincerely, it was hard not to be moved.
If I had never been with Irvin, in the face of this kind of confession, I probably would’ve fallen for William in a heartbeat.
But I had loved Irvin deeply. So, even though.I had let that go, it didn’t mean I could love that way again.
Plus, I also couldn’t start a new relationship so soon. Right now, all I wanted was to give birth safely and dedicate myself to my
research.
William wasn’t surprised by my rejection, nor did he acknowledge it. Instead, he said confidently, “You’re carrying Irvin’s babies. These couple of days, you’ve been looking for someone who resembles him. It’s because he doesn’t know your babies are his, am I right?”
I had kept my pregnancy under wraps, but I hadn’t exactly been discreet about the fact that I was searching for someone who looked like Irvin. After all, I wanted him to know I had found someone who looked similar to him, which was why my children
resembled him.
I wasn’t surprised that William had figured it out.
He continued, “At first, I thought you were doing so because Irvin and Grace will be having a child. You knew you couldn’t be together with him anymore. So, I assumed you couldn’t handle this emotionally and were looking for his replacement.
“But now, I think you’re doing this because you’re afraid of what might happen once your babies are born. You’re worried Irvin will notice the resemblance, realize the babies are his, and try to take them from you.”
William was incredibly sharp. I didn’t even need to say much, and he was able to guess the full truth on his own.
Before I could respond, he spoke again. “After these past few days of searching, you must realize it’s not that easy to find someone who looks like Irvin–especially when you’re tight on time. Otherwise, the timeline wouldn’t add up.
“While I don’t know what exactly happened between you two, I do know you want to cut ties with him completely. And since you want to raise your children on your own, I still believe I’m your best choice,” he argued.
Ever poised, William reasoned, “I may not look like Irvin, but I have the ability to protect your children and keep others from discovering the resemblance. Even if Irvin has all the influence and resources in the world, with me by your side, he still won’t be able to take them from you.
“Also, you know how ruthless Grace is, and how vile the Hardwells can be. If they find out you’re carrying Irvin’s offspring, they’ll stop at nothing to make sure you lose them, just to keep their shares from being distributed to outsiders.
“Hence, marrying me will guarantee absolute protection for your children!” he concluded.
Everything William said were worries that had crossed my mind. It was exactly why I had been in such a rush to find someon who looked like Irvin. I wanted to make him and the Hardwells believe I was pregnant with another man’s babies.
With William’s protection, my children and I would certainly be much safer. That kind of safety was so enticing that I couldn’t help wavering.
However…
In the end, I still declined. “Thank you for your kindness, Mr. Ashford. But I’m a divorcée who is carrying someone else’s babies. I’m really not good enough for someone like you.”
William was an exceptionally outstanding man. He was also incredibly handsome , came from a powerful family, and was highly capable. He was a godlike being.
In truth, even if I didn’t feel inferior and believed I was pretty good in all aspects, I would still think someone like me wasn’t

good enough for him.
William and Noah deserved only the best. And there was no need for them to raise someone else’s children.
