Chapter 444

In his entire life, William had never spoken so much in one go, nor had he ever been this earnest .
I looked at him and was about to respond.
But then, he said, “Don’t be so quick to turn me down. Go home and think it over–I’ll send you home.”
Grace and the Hardwells came to mind. At this thought, I didn’t say anything else.
I didn’t know if William was just that good at reading people or if was something else. It had never once crossed my mind that anything could happen between us, and I felt nothing possibly could.
The idea of marrying him seemed like pure fantasy. But now that was thinking about it, I felt I should give it some serious thought.
After we got in the car, William tried to start a conversation with me. But no matter what he said, I didn’t seem to be paying him any mind. Not only that, I even seemed more distant than before: Seeing this, he felt regret for the first time in his life.
William regretted talking about his feelings and sharing so much. He should’ve just proposed a contractual marriage from the start instead of telling me he wanted to marry me because he had feelings for me.
He regretted not saying he had proposed simply to ensure my babies would be safely born and to make Noah give up on me. If he had , the chances of me agreeing would’ve been so much higher.
Additionally, I wouldn’t have wanted to reject him or have my guard up on instinct. Then, William could’ve slowly worked his way into his heart.
He began to berate himself. How could he have been so impulsive?
William had always been incredibly level–headed and had never acted on impulse. Yet, for such a crucial matter that he cared greatly about, he had been rash.
He hadn’t planned or strategized. Instead, upon seeing an opening he had blurted out everything he had wanted to say on instinct. Now that he thought back on it, he felt as though that person from just now wasn’t even him.
For crying out loud, he was supposed to be famous for calculating every move and being 10 steps ahead!
The more he thought about it, the more his frustration grew–and with it, William’s eyes darkened, taking on a chilling intensity.
As for me, my head was a mèss, and I was completely lost in my thoughts. So, I didn’t notice the shift in his mood at all.
The entire journey, William stewed in his frustration, and I was wrapped up in my confusion. Neither of us spoke again.
By the time the car stopped in front of my place, William had returned to his usual cold and detached self. He didn’t ask me to think over his proposal, nor did he bring it up again.
But then, a thought crossed his mind, which prompted him to say, ‘I’ve brought your father back with me this time because he said he missed your grandmother.
T
“I couldn’t find any evidence connecting him to the criminal organization , no matter how hard I looked. But after spending time around him lately, I can’t shake the feeling that your father isn’t as straightforward as I once believed.
“So be on your guard. It’s best not to be alone with him. And make sure to bring someone with you when you visit your grandmother, ” he advised.
I hummed softly in response. Then , thinking of something, I asked, “How’s he doing with Ava’s treatment?”
‘Her condition has improved a lot. She couldn’t even get out of bed before, but now she can walk around the garden,” William replied.
He was torn between being wary and feeling grateful toward Henry because of this. At the same time, he also couldn’t help being

impressed.
Ava had been sick for so many years. He had approached the best specialists in the world, but none of them had made much difference. Yet, Henry—someone William hadn’t even heeded before–had turned out to be so capable.
I didn’t know how to feel about Henry when I heard this. But more than anything, I was just happy for Ava and hoped she could be fully cured.
After William left, I turned and entered the building. The moment I stepped inside my home, I heard someone say, “ Emi , you’re
back.”
My head reflexively snapped up in shock at the familiar voice that absolutely shouldn’t be in my home.
Lo and behold, sitting on my living room sofa and staring at me was the man William had just warned me not to be alone with- Henry Quill.
