Cordelia had been accompanying Grandma and me this entire time. Both of them were stunned by Irvin’s
words.
They had utterly despised him because of all the terrible things he had done to me in the past. But later on, the things he had done for me had proven to them that his love for me was real.
None of them had expected that the same Irvin, who once couldn’t let me go, could now smile and sincerely wish me happiness with another man.
For a moment, Grandma, who had originally planned to give him another earful, suddenly lost the desire to do so. She just huffed, claimed she was tired, and asked me to take her to the lounge to rest.
Cordelia, who had always disliked Irvin the most, came with me to help walk Grandma over.
Irvin had smiled so heartlessly on purpose, just to provoke Grandma into criticizing him. But when she didn’t say anything, he froze. He just stood there, stunned, as he watched us walk away.
Grandma really was tired. After I got her settled in, she had a small bite to eat and said she was feeling sleepy. She told us to go back out and entertain the guests while she took a nap.
Once Cordelia and I stepped out of the room, she couldn’t help but scoff. She remembered how Irvin used to act like he couldn’t live without me, yet now he could just smile and wish me well with William.
She let out a cold laugh and said, “Darling, you were absolutely right to move on from that heartless bastard! He acted like he couldn’t let you go, and now look at him!”
I laughed and looped my arm through hers. “Better this than him clinging on forever, don’t you think?”
“Yeah, I know you’re right, but it still pisses me off!”
Cordelia didn’t want him to stay hung up on me. She just couldn’t stand the fact that after everything he put me through, he could move on so easily. It was like the pain never even touched him.
I understood where she was coming from. She was only this upset because she cared so much about me.
I gave her a tighter hug. “I know you always have my back. But honestly, it’s probably for the best if he can really move on. If it weren’t for him saving my life back then, I wouldn’t even be here.
“No matter what happened between us, I don’t hate him. I really do hope he finds happiness.”
Cordelia knew I was talking about that time when I was 17–when Irvin pulled me out from under the wheels of a car and saved my life.
If he hadn’t, I wouldn’t be standing here now.
“You’re right about that…”
There was too much history between me and Irvin. We couldn’t figure out whether he hurt or saved me
more.
So in the end, Cordelia just said, “I hope you both live happy lives from here on out.”
I looked up at her and smiled. “Yeah.”

After Cordelia left to take care of something, I was about to find William when Irvin approached me. Gone was the mask he wore in front of everyone else. This version of him–more real and raw–let me see the truth. He hadn’t moved on as cleanly as he pretended to.
He had just finally accepted that we could never be together again. So, he forced himself to let go, smile, and wish me well.
Still, that was a step forward.
Just like how I had to force myself to let go of him, we would eventually move on completely and start our new lives.
He reached me and wanted to say something, but I caught a whiff of something that made me queasy before he could get a word out. I couldn’t help it and started gagging.
He immediately lost his cool and rushed to my side, panic written all over his face. “What’s wrong? Did you eat something bad? Are you feeling sick? I’ll take you to the hospital!”
I steadied myself and looked at him. When I saw his frantic expression, my gaze darkened slightly. “No need. I’m just pregnant. It’s morning sickness.”
“Pregnant? Morning sickness?” Irvin looked like he didn’t even understand my words for a second.
Then, it hit him.
At that moment, it was as if something heavy had slammed into him. He looked like he might collapse right there.
