Chapter 512
On the third day after 1 officially joined the lab, Simon took me to see Irvin“. As he did, he told me “Irvin” had slipped into a coma due to severe brain trauma and that his condition was critical He also said whether it was for “Irvin’s ” sake or someone else’s–I had to give my all for this research.
I didn’t know if Simon only told me this to motivate me to focus an promised him I would give my all. Then, I lowered my head to hide
work harder on the research, or if it was the truth. Still, I my turbulent thoughts.
“Can I go in and see him?” I asked. “His mental state was already stable before. With how serious his injuries are now, I’m worried he might not even have the will to hold on and won’t last until the day I make a breakthrough.”
I had asked before to see “Irvin“, but Simon had always refused. So this time, before he could deny my request again, I added, ” It I can’t go in and see him–talk to him–I won’t be able to help feeling uneasy. I also won’t be able to focus and dive fully into the research.”
Simon had clearly been about to refuse me again. But upon hearing my words, he paused. After a long silence , he said , “ I’ll go ask the doctor.”
With that, he turned and left. It was a long while before he returned and led me in.
I took in the sight of “Irvin” lying on the bed. He looked deathly pale and completely lifeless. I wasn’t sure if it was because I no longer loved him or if it was something else entirely, but I didn’t feel even a hint of pain for him. In fact, I felt odd.
“Irvin” was lying there motionless and unconscious. He was injured because he had protected me. Even so, I couldn’t stop myself from feeling that the man before me wasn’t actually Irvin. But if he wasn’t Irvin, why would he have risked his life to protect me?
Suddenly, it occurred to me that “Irvin” was the reason I had gotten captured in the first place. Also, we hadn’t even arrived at the beach for long before we were ambushed.
Irvin knew this criminal organization had been targeting me. So, regardless, he should never have risked me being captured just to put on a fireworks show for me. The more I thought about this, the more I realized nothing about that night added up.
However, no matter what suspicions churned in my head, I maintained a neutral expression with each step I took toward ”
Irvin’s” bed.
But before I could get close, Simon stopped me.
He said, “Mr. Irvin’s doctor has made it clear that he is in a very delicate state. He absolutely can’t afford to catch any illnesses or infections.
“If you get too close and expose him to any viruses or bacteria, it could turn fatal. So, if you don’t want anything him, I suggest you keep your distance and speak to him from afar, Ms. Quill.”
happen to
Before I could respond, he added, “Of course, if you’re not concerned about this, you’re free to go right up to him. I believe half an hour should be enough, Ms. Quill. I won’t stay and intrude any further.”
With that, Simon turned and left.
I stood three feet away from “Irvin” and studied him. My gaze shifted slightly, but I didn’t step forward.
After visiting him, I returned to my room. Shortly after , someone delivered my lunch.
Aside from the threats that were made to keep us here, Simon was extremely respectful in all other aspects. Our meals, lodging, and daily necessities were all satisfactory. Maybe these were all part of their ploy to get us to work even harder.
From the surveillance monitor, Timothy and Simon watched as I picked up my utensils and prepared to dig in.
Glancing at Simon , Timothy asked, “Are you sure you used enough of the drug? We can’t have a failed abortion after going through all this trouble.“!
