I desperately kept brushing my tears away. But no matter how hard I tried, they wouldn’t stop falling. I really didn’t want to cry. Even so, my tears refused to listen and kept streaming down my face.
Seeing that my efforts were futile, I simply lifted my head and looked at William.
“You don’t need to apologize, William. This isn’t your fault. You didn’t do anything wrong,” I said.
William had risked everything to save me. He even almost lost his life because of me. So, how could he possibly be in the wrong? Why should he apologize?
It was my fault for being useless. I had clearly felt something was off. Yet, I hadn’t suspected that “Irvin” from back then might be Timothy. Because of that, he had managed to abduct me, which was what led to all this.
It was all because of me!
William truly was skilled at reading people’s hearts. Even though hadn’t let my thoughts show, he could see the guilt I was harboring written all over my face.
“You’re even less at fault, Emi,” he said, trying to comfort me. “Don’t blame yourself for this. If anyone’s to blame, it’s Timothy! His twistedness is the cause of all this.”
Before I could say anything, he swiftly continued, “And don’t worry too much about Irvin. The bullet didn’t hit any vital organs. As long as the bleeding stops, he’ll be okay. You also don’t need to be afraid that Timothy would leave him to die, either.
“Back when Timothy faked his death and had Irvin take his place, his plan was to play around in that criminal organization. Once he had his fun, he would return to the Hardwell family, resume his glorious role as the heir, and then pin all the crimes he
had committed on Irvin.
“Timothy still needs time to pull off that plan. He won’t allow Irvin to die. In fact, he’ll make sure Irvin survives. You can tell from how he directed his men to surround only us and not Irvin,” he explained.
During our escape, William had received word that Timothy had focused all his forces on us. Being the incredibly sharp man that he was, he had figured out Timothy’s plan from that alone.
Timothy had only wanted the two of us dead in the pursuit. That was why William had been able to leave Irvin behind.
“ I’ve already sent someone to check what happened to Irvin. I believe we’ll have definite news soon. So, don’t feel too bad. Most importantly, don’t beat yourself up over it,” William said , caressing my head gently as he spoke.
He really couldn’t bear to see me like this.
I looked up at him. His eyes were filled with concern , but I couldn’t say anything. I didn’t know what to say.
I knew feeling miserable and crying wouldn’t help. The priority right now was getting information and coming up with a way to
rescue Irvin.
Still, I couldn’t help it. I couldn’t keep myself from despairing, nor could I stop my tears from falling. I also couldn’t help feeling worried. I was scared Irvin was in critical condition.
Despite this, I didn’t allow myself to wallow in my despair, fear, or tears. Irvin was waiting for me to save him. So, I had to pull myself together, calm myself down, and think of every possible way to do so.
I didn’t dare allow myself to consider the possibility that his injury had been life–threatening or that he might already be gone. Because if that was true, I wouldn’t know how to go on.
Noah had rushed over as soon as he got the news. When he arrived he found William smoking under the night sky. The desolate energy radiating off of him made Noah’s heart clench.
