Ava just couldn’t understand it. She couldn’t fathom how a mother like this could exist.
Ava had lost her own mother when she was very young. But in her memories, her mother had been the gentlest and most loving
person on earth.
She used to believe that she and Noah were very pitiful because they had lost their mother at a young age. She had thought there was nothing sadder than growing up without a mother.
But now , seeing how my birth mother behaved, Ava suddenly felt that motherless children weren’t more pitiful. Instead, growing up with a mother like mine was much worse than growing up without one.
This realization caused her heart to ache for me, and she couldn’t help reaching over to grasp my hand.
My expression hadn’t changed at all. In fact, my gaze even held a hint of contempt as I watched Mom grovel.
When Ava noticed this, her heart ached even more. She also knew used to yearn for my parents‘ love as a child. So, she couldn’t imagine how much hurt I must have repeatedly endured to become like this.
Squeezing my hand, she said, “You have us from now on, Aunt Emi. We’ll be the family who loves you most in this world.”
I turned to look at Ava. Her hand was warm, and her words were even warmer.
The Ashfords really were all wonderful people. They might seem cold on the outside, but they were warm and loving at heart I couldn’t help but squeeze her hand firmly in return.
“Emi, please! I’m begging you! Just let Lianne go just this once!” Mom repeated.
Her forehead banged loudly against the pavement as she grovelled making it impossible to ignore her, no matter how much I wanted to.
I originally hadn’t wanted to waste another second on Mom. I had planned on having her dragged away so that Ava and I could go back to our shopping trip.
But then, a thought came to mind. Instead of having Mom dragged away, I had someone bring over the information I had uncovered and show it to her.

Once I was sure Mom had read everything, I released Ava’s hand and rolled down the window. Propping my arm on it, I rested my chin on my hand and looked at Mom.

Mom didn’t disappoint. Once she had taken in all the information and realized what it all meant, her eyes went shockingly wide. Her whole face was filled with stunned horror and disbelief. She even looked like she was about to go mad.
However, she soon pulled herself together. Glaring at me, she said, “Don’t think forging documents like this will make me believe you, Emilia, or that it will make me give up on Lianne! Lianne looks so much like David! There’s no way she’s not his daughter!”

I didn’t respond. Instead, I motioned to someone standing nearby to play the video.
It was of Henry and his true first love–Julianne’s birth mother–in an intimate and tender moment. The video also had audio. In it , Regina couldn’t stop talking about her precious daughter, Julianne.
The longer Mom watched, the paler she became . By the time the video ended, her face was ghostly pale and devoid of all color.
