The chief of the ultrasound department glanced at the monitor again and said firmly, “This patient doesn’t need a heart transplant. In fact, her heart is in perfect condition . ”
“What?” Dad was completely stunned.
The chief added, “I’ve been doing cardiac ultrasounds for years. I am certain that she doesn’t have any heart disease.”
“No way. That’s impossible!” Dad shook his head repeatedly in disbelief.
Although the chief sounded so confident, he just couldn’t bring himself to accept it.
It wasn’t that he wanted Regina to be sick, but for the past two years, he had driven himself mad trying to find a heart for her. The belief that his beloved was on the verge of death had been burned into his mind.
And now they were telling him she was perfectly healthy? He couldn’t believe it.
“If you don’t believe me, you can compare this with the scan images of an actual cardiac patient,” the chief offered.
“There’s no need to compare. I know exactly what her previous ultrasound looked like. Let me examine her myself!” Dad said as he stepped forward and snatched the probe from the chief’s hands.
To make Dad truly believe she had heart disease and find a heart that matched her lover’s, Regina had never shown him any forged test results.
They were real medical records of her lover. She had simply replaced his name with hers.
Because Dad had been overly concerned with her condition and desperate to find a compatible heart, he had memorized every detail of those test results.
Even without holding the reports, he could recall them vividly in his mind.
And he had read countless medical research on cardiac disease. With his intelligence and excellent memory, he had practically become a semi–professional himself.
So when he personally scanned Regina, he realized it was completely different from the results he remembered from before.
No matter how much he tried, her heart did seem completely healthy.
Only then did he finally believe that she really didn’t have heart disease.
His hands started to tremble from the shock.
He truly, deeply loved her.
So much so that even in the moment he confirmed her heart was fine, his first reaction wasn’t anger at g lied to.
It was pure joy and relief that she was alright.
“Oh my God! It was a misdiagnosis!” he cried.
He remembered that ever since she told him she needed a heart transplant, he had never taken her to any other hospital for an examination.
So he figured that the doctors in the initial hospital had made careless mistakes.
