The more Mom thought about it these days, the more she realized hat I was the only one in her entire life who had ever loved her without expecting anything in return.
And yet, I was also the one she had hurt the most.
Once she realized how unforgivable her past actions were, she understood that I would never forgive her. I would never treat her the way I used to, and there was nothing she could do to change that.
At first, Mom didn’t want to do anything. She just wanted to quietly live out the rest of her life.
But just like everyone, the more she lost something and the more out of reach it is, the more she longed for it.
It kept her awake at night, tossing and turning, unable to sleep. Eventually, she began to feel she couldn’t just sit back and do nothing.
She had to at least try.
So when Mom heard I was back, the first thing she did was make a pot of soup, hoping to take care of me.
She thought that no matter what, I would still somehow accept her gesture of kindness. She didn’t expect me to react the way I did.
Seeing my cold attitude and remembering how warm I used to be, the huge contrast struck her and hurt even more.

When she was sent outside and the door slammed shut in her face she was so overwhelmed that her legs nearly gave out.
Just as she was about to knock on the door and beg me for forgiveness, Jeremy arrived. He caught her hand and said, “Mom, don’t make a scene here.”
Seeing him, she clung to his arm like he was her last hope.
“Jeremy, you came just in time. Emi is closest to you, and she listens to you. Can you this once?” she asked.

Looking at her like that, he felt a mix of emotions. All he could think was that they should have realized all this earlier.
That included him too.
They had all made terrible, unforgivable mistakes.
In this world, not all wrongs could be forgiven, just because the wrongdoers were remorseful.
Maybe it was because I’d risen to a height he could never reach in his life, but Jeremy no longer felt jealous of me.
Instead, he genuinely hoped I’d go even higher, because he would be able to benefit from it too.
When Mom didn’t get a response, she clutched his arm even tighter.
“Mom, I want Emi to forgive you too,” Jeremy said helplessly. “I want our family to be happy and whole again. But that’s just not possible. If you really feel sorry, then stop trying to see her. Let her live her life in peace.“.
We really were twins. He hadn’t seen me, but he already knew exactly how I felt.
“But…” Mom still wanted to say something, but he dragged her away.
He had always known me better than anyone. He knew that at this point, there was no going back.
That was why he had never asked me to forgive him, either. All he hoped now was that we could at least keep things the way they were and somewhat tolerate each other.
