I instinctively frowned in irritation but forced myself to hold it in. Irvin stared at me for a long moment as if he wanted to say something, but his pride ultimately wouldn’t allow it.
In the end, he spoke in his usual haughty tone. “Emilia, I’ll admit that I was at fault first. If you regret this, we can halt the divorce proceedings anytime. But you’ll still need to apologize to Lianne. No matter what, you shouldn’t have refused to provide blood when she was in such a critical condition.”
He thought that I’d been too cruel the previous day. In the face of a life–or–death situation, I not only refused to donate blood but also held everyone up for so long. It was sheer luck that Julianne survived. Otherwise, I might have caused her death.
At that time, Irvin had been so furious that he regretted ever knowing me and said he never wished to see me again.
But when he saw me today, he couldn’t stay mad. He understood that he’d been the one at fault in the first place. If I regretted my actions and stopped pushing for a divorce, he could let go of the past and start fresh with me.
He believed that we could still be together moving forward.
Sometimes, Irvin was frustrated at his own weakness. Even when I’d been so heartless that I didn’t have any regard for another human’s life, he found himself wanting to me her another chance. He still couldn’t let me go.
I couldn’t stand him bringing up apologizing to Julianne at every turn. Hence, I was about to snap at him for being unhinged–if he loved apologizing so much, he should go do it himself.
But before I could say anything, he let go of me and turned to leave.
I quickly reminded myself that I didn’t have the divorce certificate yet. Taking several deep breaths, I calmed myself down and resisted the urge to chase after Irvin and curse him out.
To avoid running into him again, I stayed inside for a while before heading out.
The moment I stepped out, I saw Cordelia leaning against her red sports car and waving at me excitedly. With a smile on my face, I walked toward her.
Although I hadn’t obtained the divorce certificate yet, I was halfway to securing complete freedom. Thus, Cordelia and I celebrated for several days until she had to return to her research team for a project. Reluctantly, we parted ways, and I went back home.
After showering, I heard the doorbell ring. Thinking it was the food delivery I’d ordered, I casually dried my hair and went to open the door.
To my surprise, it wasn’t the delivery–it was my family.
I noticed that Julianne’s face was even paler than before and raised an eyebrow. It seemed that although her injuries weren’t life–threatening if she didn’t get a blood transfusion, they were serious enough for her to genuinely need one.
She was as ruthless with herself as ever.
Before I could say anything, my parents pushed past me and made their way inside.
Judging by their demeanor, it seemed they wouldn’t leave if I didn’t set them straight. So, I closed the door and followed them into the living room.
Before I could even sit down, Mom blurted, “Millicent, are you taking away half of Irvin’s assets after divorcing him?”

Dad slammed the table angrily and scolded, “You go to Irvin right now and tell him you’ll leave with nothing! That man worked himself to the bone to achieve what he has today. You did nothing but live in comfort at home. Yet, you have the audacity to take half of his hard–earned fortune!”
They had assumed that, given how much I loved Irvin, I wouldn’t make things difficult for him even if I were heartbroken enough to want a divorce. They had assumed that I would leave without taking anything.
That was why they had pushed Irvin to divorce me as soon as possible. But now, they had discovered that not only would I be divorcing him, but I was also taking half of his assets! They were outraged at this outcome, and they were unable to accept it.
I couldn’t help but laugh—what a loving family I had. I was left speechless for a moment.
Just then, Julianne stepped forward demurely, “Millie, there’s really nothing between me and Irvin. Please don’t divorce him because of me. Don’t take away half of Irvin’s assets, okay?”
