“The Irvin you see now really isn’t the same man he used to be. So it’s totally normal that you think he seems like a good person, feel sorry for him, and can’t help wanting to forgive him.
“As the religious teaching goes, ‘To know your wrongs and correct them is the greatest virtue.‘ If someone truly realizes their mistakes, then it’s only natural to want to forgive them,” I reassured.
Cordelia couldn’t help protesting when she heard this. “But he hurt you so badly before. If you forgive him so easily, doesn’t that mean all the pain you experienced in the past was for nothing? And what if he turns back into his old self after you forgive him?”
Despite saying this, a part of her instinctively knew this wasn’t possible. The current Irvin would unlikely ever hurt me again. Still, she couldn’t keep herself from thinking like this.
This was the effect of being emotionally scarred. No matter how good Irvin was now, his past self had left deep wounds in both me and Cordelia. And wounds like this didn’t just vanish.
Therefore, no matter how good we think he is now, we still couldn’t bring ourselves to forgive him completely or forget the pain
he had inflicted.
“Alle need to do is appreciate how good he is right now. There’s no need to think too far ahead, nor is there any need to keep dwelling on the past,” I stated.
People just needed to live in the present. Right now, I only cared that our babies were doing well. And as long as Irvin treated them well, I would allow him to be a good father to them.
If he were to tire of this, change, and stop treating them well, then we’ll just leave him. There was no need to be afraid of something that hasn’t happened yet.
Cordelia was stunned by my words and a little confused by what I meant. “So, have you forgiven him or not?”
“It’s not really about forgiveness or not. It’s just–I don’t hold anything against who he is now. And honestly, the person he is now is really quite good,” I replied.
My response only puzzled Cordelia more. “Darling, I know you better than anyone, and even I don’t know what’s going on in that head of yours right now. Are you saying you’ve forgiven him and want to get back together, or what?”
“Right now, I don’t have any plans to get back together with him. just think he’s not bad right now, that’s all,” I answered.

Before Cordelia could say anything else, I added, “To me, love no longer plays any important role in my life–now or in the future. What I care about now and in the future are my children and my research.
“Whether or not he changes again in the future doesn’t matter. I don’t need to waste time pondering whether to forgive him or to get back together with him. Whatever happens, happens.”
To me, love and whether I reunite with Irvin no longer had any bearing in my life whatsoever. I would never agonize over whether I should forgive him. I would never feel torn over this again , nor would I waste any more time on love.
Cordelia studied me for a long moment before she finally understood my perspective. She realized I had completely moved on.
Smiling , she said, “I guess I was being too narrow–minded. It’s not a must for a woman to have love and a family. These days, being single and thriving is the new trend!
