Serenity left her sister’s rented apartment and arrived home at half-past ten at night.
She opened the door to her pitch-dark house.

Serenity stepped inside and turned on the light, then closed and locked the door behind her. After some consideration, she opened the door again and grabbed a pair of Zachary’s loafers to place by the front door.
This gesture was meant to indicate that there was a man in the house.

“You’re back, Ms. Hunt,” Mrs. Lane said as she emerged from her bedroom upon hearing the noise.

“Old Mrs. York went home. Your brother-in-law picked her up. She thought you wouldn’t be home tonight, so she asked me to let you know when you return tomorrow p>

Mrs. Lane explained, “Old Mrs. York mentioned she moved in with you because she had a disagreement with your husband. Now that they’ve reconciled, she returned to her own house p>
She suspected that Old Mrs. York was avoiding being seen by the Stones, prompting her decision to move back.
The missus would be spending time with the Stones frequently now that it was confirmed she was Mrs. Stone’s niece. Old Mrs. York intended to keep her distance until Mr. Zachary revealed the truth to the missus.
This was why Old Mrs. York had to leave.

Serenity sighed. “That family is the most pretentious I’ve ever encountered. Women need to understand their partner’s family before saying ‘I do p>
It’s crucial for women to know what they are getting into, especially with families like the Browns, who concealed their true colors for years before revealing their ugly side.
Mrs. Lane poured Serenity a glass of water and sat across from her. “Human emotions are fleeting. People can easily fall in and out of love. Your sister is grounded and decisive. She didn’t cling to her ex and chose to divorce p>
“Even so, it was a messy divorce,” Serenity replied.
Leaning back against the sofa, she continued, “Mrs. Lane, you have a wealth of experience. What do you think about my husband? Will he end up like Hank? He treats me well now, but Hank was good to my sister back then, too p>
“And I mean really good. Hank would have given anything to my sister, but now… You’re right. Human emotions are fleeting. I wonder if my husband’s feelings for me will ever change. If he cheats on me like Hank did, I won’t argue—I’ll go straight to divorce. I’d rather let him go to the other woman p>
She believed her man would be tainted if he was touched by another person.
