The small living room, already cluttered with belongings, felt even more cramped with an extra person inside.
Jasper sat in the armchair and placed the document labeled “Paternity Test” on the coffee table.

That last time was just after graduation. We hadn’t seen or spoken to each other for nearly a month by then. Not since that day in the car, when I’d asked him that question and he’d said, Graduation’s almost here. After
that, we never met again.
Well, almost never.
We did cross paths a few times. Back then, everyone was busy job-hunting, partying, drinking in small groups, talking about life, shooting the breeze about their futures. There were endless gatherings, and Jasper was the busiest of all-but that never slowed down his personal life.
Three days before graduation-two weeks after we’d stopped talking-the dorm was nearly empty. Only my roommate Blair Hale and I were left.
That day, I’d just mailed some of my things home and returned to the room to find Blair applying lipstick in front of a mirror.

That was just Jasper. He did what he wanted, never bothering to hide anything from anyone, and he certainly didn’t care how others felt.
Her phone buzzed on the desk. She answered quickly, and a sweet smile spread across her lips at whatever was said on the other end.
Even with her back to me, I could clearly hear his voice.
I tried to ignore it, but his gentle tone cut right through me like a knife.
When she hung up, Blair turned and met my eyes. The smile in her eyes only turned more unapologetic when she saw the look I couldn’t hide.

With that, she walked out in her heels.
My finger hovered over the call button on my phone, too afraid to press it.
So it was true. We were over.
And I the one who’d been with him-hadn’t even been told. I had to hear it from someone else.
Tears fell before I could stop them, dripping onto the screen.
My hand shook as I tried to exit, but I accidentally dialed his number instead.
My first instinct was to hang up-but I didn’t.
A faint glimmer of hope flickered in my chest.
Just try. What if he answers?
But then I worried-what would I say if he did? Ask if we were really over? Ask if he even wanted to break up?
My hand trembled. Those few seconds felt like hours.
My heart raced, sinking lower with every beat.
I was afraid he’d answer. Even more afraid he wouldn’t.
Two seconds later, the call was declined.
A dull ringing filled my ears.
Through the haze, I could hear my own heartbeat-heavy, pounding against my ribs, each beat jolting my
frayed nerves.
