Jensen turned his head to look at Israel, his eyes as dark and deep as an abyss. The intensity of his gaze made Israel’s skin crawl. “I understand, Mr. Hawthorne! I’ll get on it right away!” Israel turned and quickly left the room.
Jensen’s gaze returned to Rebekah. Her grandmother’s death anniversary was just over a week away. Moving the plan up wouldn’t change much. He needed to create
a distraction for Benjamin, to keep him from focusing on Rebekah.
He gently took her cold hand in his. “This time,” he whispered, “it’s my turn to protect you p>
Around midnight, Rebekah finally stirred. The room was dark, save for the moonlight filtering through the window, casting an eerie glow that made the sterile room feel as suffocating as a coffin.
“Ah!” she cried out, scrambling up and pressing herself against the wall.
Jensen, who had stepped out to make a call, heard her scream and immediately hung up, rushing back into the room. He flipped on the light, flooding the room with stark white brightness.
Seeing her huddled on the bed, he quickly went to her, placing his hands on her shoulders. “Rebekah p>
At his touch, she instinctively struggled, but his grip was firm, his warm hands holding her securely. “Rebekah, it’s me. It’s me,” he soothed, his voice gentle and calming.
Feeling the warmth from his hands and hearing his reassuring voice, like a soft spring breeze, Rebekah slowly began to regain her senses. With tears still clinging to her lashes, she looked up at him blankly.
When her eyes met Jensen’s worried gaze, it was as if she had fully returned to herself. She threw herself into his arms.

Jensen held her tightly, each of her shuddering sobs feeling like a tear in his own heart. He gently patted her back, murmuring, “It’s okay now. Everything’s okay p>
Rebekah cried for a long time, until she was exhausted and drowsy in his arms. Sensing her cries subsiding Jensen gently eased his hold. Ignoring the large wet patch on his shirt, he tenderly wiped the tears from her face. “Should I have the doctor come take a look at you p>
Unwilling to be left alone in the room, Rebekah looked up at him with a frightened frown, her hand still clutching the corner of his shirt. Jensen looked down at her hand, then took it in his with a soft smile. “Don’t worry, I’m not going anywhere p>
He pressed the call button by the bed.
The nurse and doctor arrived together. The doctor asked the nurse and Jensen to step outside for a moment. Jensen glanced at Rebekah, who seemed calm enough, and complied.
After a series of checks, the doctor confirmed that Rebekah was physically fine. As he was about to call Jensen back in, Rebekah looked at him anxiously. “Doctor, can you wait until they’re back before you leave p>
The doctor paused for a second, then nodded. After the nurse returned, the doctor called Jensen out into the hallway. “Miss Fletcher’s condition isn’t severe, but she was clearly traumatized by something temible. She shouldn’t be left alone right now. As her husband, you’ll need to stay close and take good care of her for the next few days.” With that, the doctor left.
Jensen stood frozen for a moment, then a slow smile touched his lips. He returned
to the room just as the nurse was leaving. Rebekah’s face was still pale.
