Rebekah must have pulled a lot of strings to get here. A little digging would have told her he’d be attending. Wasn’t it obvious she was here to see him, to beg for forgiveness?
His eyes fell on her dress, and his jaw tightened. He hated to admit it, but she looked breathtakingly beautiful tonight. So beautiful that she had caught his eye the moment he saw her. He was sure Rebekah dressed that way just to please him. After all, in his mind, who else was worthy of such effort?
The next second, Rebekah yanked her arm free. Her expression was calm, but her impatience was almost tangible. “I p>
Before she could finish, Candice fluttered over like a butterfly, linking her arm affectionately with Benjamin’s.
“Benjamin, you won’t believe it! So many people recognized me and asked for my autograph!” she said playfully. “You’d better be careful around me now. The paparazzi might snap a picture and get the wrong idea! My die-hard fans would come after you p>
Then, as if just noticing Rebekah, she quickly dropped his arm, feigning
embarrassment. “Oh, I’m so sorry, Rebekah! We’re just friends. Don’t get the
wrong idea p>
She looked Rebekah up and down, her eyes filled with a frosty jealousy at the sight of her dress. But she quickly composed herself, affecting a generous tone. “Rebekah, you came here for Benjamin, didn’t you? I showed him the divorce papers you sent. There’s no hurdle a married couple can’t overcome p>
She took Rebekah’s hand with a wide smile. “It must have been hard for you to get into this gala. Why don’t you just apologize to Benjamin? I’ll be your witness, and we can put all this behind us p>
Watching her over-the-top performance, Rebekah scoffed internally.
She pulled her hand away, and in the next instant, Candice let out an exaggerated cry of pain, clutching her wrist. “Rebekah, there’s no need to get physical… I’m glad it was just my wrist p>
Benjamin’s face hardened. He quickly examined Candice’s wrist and saw a faint red

Rebekah almost wanted to laugh. Could a man as shrewd as Benjamin, a titan of the business world, really not see through such a transparent trick? She knew he could. He just didn’t care. He was simply biased toward Candice. Whenever they argued, he always took Candice’s side.
A wave of frustration and hurt washed over her. Even though she had decided to leave him and their son, it still stung.
Rebekah lowered her gaze and tried to walk past him again. “I need to find my friend p>
“Rebekah, did you not learn your lesson in prison?” Benjamin’s voice was suddenly ice-cold. He met her impatient glare, and a strange, bitter feeling tightened his chest. “Stop being so childish p>
Rebekah stared at him, her blood running cold. Those three months in prison were her nightmare, and now he was using that nightmare to threaten her?
Sensing her chill, Benjamin softened his tone, tightening his grip on her arm. “Rebekah, without my family, you have no one to protect you p>
This was as close to a concession as Benjamin ever got, but Rebekah could only find it laughable. If she hadn’t known that he was the one who put her in prison, she might have actually been moved by this rare moment of vulnerability.
