Chapter 241

Follow Me, Little Wolf

Thane

I watch my fated mate rest heavy in her nest with that damn opossum sprawled out on its back on top of her. Normally her wolf would demand the sheet be changed and to rid the nest of that smell, but her wolf worries for her Raven.

I pluck a strand of Ayla’s hair and place it in the vial. Doing a DNA test against Trevor and Derek will be the only way to figure out if she is truly related to Stevens and how far this ring could go.

It takes time,

I need to decide if I tell Stevens about his sons. I also need to change some policies regarding our border booths.

Had those Alphas been smarter, it could have been far worse.

The scheduling system being down makes me nervous that our traitor within our IT group.

Computers, poisons, bombings, there is no rhyme or reason. Why not use a sniper?

Maybe the traitor can’t get their influence into my guard.

Maybe they have no access to a firearm.

Or cannot use one.

Poison would have worked.

Bombing didn’t.

Maybe due to lack of knowledge.

They tried it again.

But it blew up too late. We were the targets.

They do not know what they are doing when it comes to weapons. That most certainly should narrow it down, but there is nothing to compare it to.

The census papers were ruined.

Watching Ayla nap makes me want to give up, take her and just flee. Hide my family from the darkness still out there.

I know she wouldn’t want that.

I don’t want to break my vow to take down the trafficking ring.

I take the vials and drap them into the envelope. Little Wolf stirs in her nest, rolling onto her side while cupping her stomach. The opossum slides off onto its head. She is so incredibly stunning filling out with our pup.

I have to keep making the world safer for them.

“Why are you so deep in thought?” Ayla yawns from her nest, reaching down and grabbing the opossum and sniffing it.

“I have to drop something off at the office. Do you want to finally see Raven p>

“Is she done?” Ayla sits up excitedly, holding the opossum over her shoulder like a baby.

I hate it.

“Not by a long shot, but I am hoping she will want that thing you are holding onto back p>

Rowan wants to eat it.

“You know if we didn’t want to have another pup right away, we could fill the gap with an opossum p>

“Another reason it needs to leave.” Ayla laughs as I stand and extend my hand, taking hers and helping her out of her nest. I bent down kissing her, sighing into her mouth at the relief I feel that she is okay.

It happens too often.

“I’ll be downstairs.” I leave her and the furry rat to get ready while I mind–link Cyrus that we will be in and to calm it down for a while.

Or cover it.

Ayla meets me downstairs in joggers and a sweatshirt I heard her crying over earlier.

Because her clothes are too tight again.

“You look amazing, Little Wolf. I just want to take you back to the nest and bury myself in you all night.” Lavender wafts thickly around me as her arousal to the idea becomes apparent. “But I need to drop this off first, then I want to take you somewhere before we go to the

dungeon p>

I take Ayla’s hand and lead her to the SUV, helping her climb inside and buckling her in safely. I kiss her belly before closing the door. I growl as the opossum hisses at me as I buckle in, pulling out of the drive and into town.

I pull up in front of the normal, brick, two story home. The home that has remained untouched since they died.

My parents.

i nowed qs into their chin but there is no way I could consider bring here. “Where are we?” Ayla watches me intently as the difta through the sections within the hand. I vowed to give you everything i have. All of me, I’m not doing that if I don’t share this with you. bringing you here. I trail off

“You parent’s home?” she asks and 1 nod. I get out and go around, opening the door and helping her out of the car.

“Yes, I haven’t been here since the incident. Everything is untouched. I pay somebody to keep up on it.” I stare at the entrance, wanting

to be anywhere else but here, but I am also an Alpha of my word.

The front door creaks the same. I hate how I can inhale deeply and not smell them.

I’m not sure how to describe seeing everything again. The fridge magnets, the plush carpeting the family photos.

Normality,

My skin tightens at the thought.

“Are you okay? We don’t have to do this.” Ayla whispers, rubbing my forearm. I squeezed her hand and gestured down the hall. “First door on the left.” Ayla stops in front of it and slowly turns the handle.

The bright, painful colors come into view. “My sister’s room. Only fair you see a part of her before she ended up there.” I push the door open all the way as I follow Little Wolf in.

“Wow, it is…. bright p>

“I think you’re trying to say it’s a chaotic mess taped to hot pink walls. Loud, just like she was.” The room is covered in posters of half- naked Alphas and feathers. Records and lights. Such a teenage she–wolf.

I miss her.

“That she was.” Ayla whispers, walking deeper into the room, looking at all the photos tapped up in collages in the room. I can feel Ayla’s love for my sister through the bond. I am grateful they had each other for a while, although I wish it had been different. I still would have met Ayla. She is my fated mate, I just don’t know how.

I never grieved my sister. I felt constant rage that she was gone and constant defeat that my parents were failing. The realization that Della killed my sister by rejecting her mate hurts. I know that she did not realize that was what she was doing, but she did. Della would have gladly accepted that same fate for Little Wolf had they been swapped out.

Her obsession for me consumed her.

Why? There is not one thing about me worth the life of my sister.

I’ll never get the answers I need.

“ What are you going to do with the house?” Ayla squeezes my hand, I didn’t realize she was holding

“ Take what we want, donate the rest,” I shrug, trying to get my guilt spiral under control.

“ I want to see some photos of you while I think about it.” Ayla smiles mischievously. I shake my head back and forth hoping to hide my long hair stage from her but she stick out her bottom lip, pouting at me. Those teal become doe like.

Damn it.
