Chapter 12

“What do you mean by ‘my safety’, Elder Gita? Is there someone planning to kill me?” I asked, arching a curious eyebrow.

I didn’t put much thought into the pack’s spiritual matters and left it all to Elder Gita… But that didn’t mean I wasn’t a believer.

On the contrary, my strong belief in the moon goddess and her ways was what made me confused about WHY the Moon’s Chosen ended up being an ordinary maid.

Anyway, Elder Gita cleared her throat, still standing in front of my desk with a somber expression on her face.

“There’s no one after your life… Yet, Alpha Kaene.” She blurted, looking grim. “But there will be consequences if you continue with your decision to reject your mate. Phoebe was made the Moon’s Chosen for a reason and rejecting her will make her incapable of helping this pack and showing her true potential p>

True potential?

What the heck was this old woman talking about?

“The Moon’s Chosen of this pack and other packs from throughout history have always been young women of prestigious social standing, Elder.” I began with an explanation, hoping I could get my thoughts across. “I admittedly made a hasty decision, but you have to understand what accepting Phoebe as my mate would entail p>

I was hesitating with telling the older woman that I’d accepted Phoebe already. But I also wanted to gain more insight from her.

“So you’re suggesting you’re okay with testing the Moon goddess’s wrath as opposed to accepting a ‘simple’ maid as your mate?” Elder Gita raised an eyebrow, seeming completely lost with my decision.

I mean, I did make a deal with Phoebe, but it was something I was still contemplating, especially because of my mother and her subtle threats.

I didn’t need anyone to tell me the Alpha Council had their eyes on me.

Anyway, after clearing my throat, I leaned toward Gita’s position and sighed. “I don’t wish to test the Moon goddess’s will, Elder Gita. That’s why I’ve already found a way around all this. I’ve decided to keep Phoebe as my mate p>

Elder Gita’s eyes squinted like she was scrutinizing me, but she eventually nodded her understanding. “Good. It’s not like you had a choice otherwise p>

Ugh… What was with the backhanded comments?

“Listen, Elder Gita.” I raised a hand, waving it dismissively. “If that’s all you have to tell me, then I p>

“That’s not all I have to tell you, Alpha.” Elder Gita murmured with a foreboding tone. “I’m not exactly sure what, but the Moon goddess warns me that this pack is going to go through a lot of trails which we wouldn’t be able to survive if you and the Moon’s Chosen don’t find a way to get along p>

A cold shiver went down my spine as soon as she said that.

But she didn’t bother elaborating further, turning around and walking away, her flowy white dress dancing gracefully behind her.

When she got to the door, however, she paused, turning her head to me. “Best of luck, Alpha Kaene. The wolves of Bluemoon pack and beyond are watching p>

And with that, she walked out of the office, leaving me alone with my thoughts.

I drummed my fingers on the armrest of my chair, anxiety taking over my thoughts.

Groaning to myself, I got up and began pacing around my office. My wolf was already taking advantage of this opportunity, trying to get me to go find his mate.

Deep down, I was also curious to check her out after she’d probably been transformed by the efforts of the maids I sent to her.

“I guess it wouldn’t hurt to see her one more time tonight,” I muttered to myself, a silly grin curling up my lips as I dropped everything I was doing and made my way toward Phoebe’s suite.

However, when I got there, I found the suite empty, causing a frown to appear on my face.

I sniffed into the air, scenting the lingering smell of her pheromones.

My eyes dimmed as I strutted toward her bathroom, following the lingering scent of her that wafted from there.

Suddenly, my wolf reacted by howling inside my head, trying to get me to find her.

‘Not now you mutt.’ I snarled mentally, my gaze becoming cold.

Glancing around the room one last time, I brought out my phone and dialed my assistant’s number.

“Lyra. I need you to call in two maids for me. Miranda and Brittany.” I ordered in a calm tone, my hands clenched with anticipation.

Luckily, she didn’t ask me any questions and responded with the same calmness. “Very well, sir. I’ll call them in right away p>

I hung up, stomping my feet in anticipation. Where could Phoebe have gone?

Had she bailed out at the last second and decided she no longer wanted any part of my deal?

“Hmph… So she’s not as feisty as I thought.” I sniggered to myself, rubbing my jaw.

I waited patiently for the maids and eventually, I heard a knock on the door.

“Come in.” I blurted, leaning against a desk in the suite.

Right on cue, Miranda and Brittany walked in, anxiety clear in their expressions.

They bowed swiftly to the extent that I thought their heads would hit the ground if they remained in that position.

Rolling my eyes, I waved my hand casually. “Enough of that. Where’s the Moon Chosen p>

The two maids raised their heads, glancing at themselves before turning their gazes to me.

“W– we don’t know, sir.” One of the maids, Miranda, bowed slightly, her voice quivering with fear.

I squinted my eyes, folding my arms in front of my chest. “What do you mean ‘you don’t know’? Didn’t I send you two here to ensure her needs are taken care of for the times that she spends in this mansion? How could you lose track of her on literally her first night p>

My tone increased toward the end as a guttural growl escaped my throat.

I glared at the two maids who had their heads lowered, not daring to look me in the eyes.

Someone was definitely going to lose their jobs if they didn’t explain themselves soon.
