Chapter 166

“He’s dead, sir p>

I froze when I heard those words.

The Gamma had been one of the most hardworking and loyal members of my Council.

Losing him wasn’t just a huge blow to the pack, but a blow to me as well.

First my mother and now this? No… I can’t afford to have any more losses.

“I’m going back out there,” I said decisively, glancing at one of the pack soldiers. “You, where’s the military advisor p>

He bowed before responding to me. “He’s still out there, sir p>

Good. I’ll go find him.

“In the meantime, I’m placing you in charge of the soldiers here.” I pointed at him, my gaze unwavering. “Guide them and take charge of the wards if necessary. Help the survivors who make it here to settle in p>

The soldier seemed shocked by my decision but I ignored that, running out of the compound in my human form.

I scanned my gaze around the estate, checking out the situation.

It seemed the werewolves were showing resistance, but the Hunters came prepared.

It was a ’fifty-fifty’ situation and those were NOT favorable odds.

Suddenly, I spotted something that made me widen my eyes in shock.

In the distance, Phoebe ran toward Elder Gita’s residence, in her wolf form.

It was the first time I had seen her in this form. She was beautiful as always, with luscious grey fur and deep blue eyes.

However, her wolf was only slightly bigger than a normal wolf, and it seemed she was cornered into a dilemma.

On one of the buildings, I spotted a Hunter pointing a rifle at her, his eyes dimmed as he readied himself to shoot.

No p>

“Phoebe!” I yelled, running toward her and trying to get her out of the way.

But she didn’t notice me on time, trying hard to avoid the bodies of people on the ground and also glancing back.

It was then that I noticed the two little children on her back. They clung to her fur tightly, their hair flinging backward due to the breeze.

My heart warmed up at the sight, but unfortunately, that warmth was replaced by a bone-chilling coldness when the sound of a gunshot resounded around the air.

“No!” I roared, instantly shifting into my wolf and sprinting toward her.

She missed her footing, falling face-first on the ground and sliding through the snow.

Despite all this, the children on her back clung to her fur like a life support.

I got to her, using my snout to touch her body, my heart racing as I searched for bullet wounds.

But to my surprise… There weren’t any.

I snarled, swerving my head to the building where the Hunter had been.

That was just in time for me to see Negan standing on top of the building, holding the bastard by the throat and raising him into the air.

“Tell me, Hunter! Do you humans have any gadgets to assist with flight?” Negan’s voice boomed menacingly from the top of the building, a sadistic grin curling up his lips.

I paused, squinting my eyes.

I’ve never seen him like this before. Even during the last Hunter attack before Phoebe joined the picture, he wasn’t this brutal.

However, it seemed I wasn’t done seeing the extent of his brutality as he grabbed the Hunter’s left arm and ripped it clean off his shoulder, causing him to scream in agony as his blood got carried into the wind.

“What? Did I break your wings?” Negan chuckled coldly, seemingly enjoying the torment.

The Hunter kicked, struggling to get out of his grip.

At this point, I took my gaze away from the scene and focused back on Phoebe who shifted back into her human form, holding her head and rubbing it.

“Gosh, was I shot?” She mumbled, touching her body and searching for a gunshot wound.

However, she found nothing. Just like I hadn’t found anything.

Just then, she finally landed her gaze on me while hugging the children close to herself. “Kaene?” She seemed surprised.

I simply nodded my head, before rubbing my face against her’s, causing her to giggle.

“Your wolf is so beautiful.” She remarked, caressing my fur and allowing herself to scrutinize me more.

She’d seen me shift before I left the event Hall, but I guess I ran out before she could get a good look.

Anyway, I brought my gaze to the children in her arms who looked at me with fear in their eyes.

“Their parents were killed in the event Hall,” Phoebe whispered sadly, subconsciously fondling their hair. “So many people have died already, Kaene. A– And I still haven’t found my family p>

Her voice cracked at the end and her eyes glistened with tears.

It was at this point that I couldn’t take it anymore and shifted into my human form, pulling her into a hug.

“Everything’s going to be fine,” I assured her, brushing my fingers through her hair. “We’ll find your family and we’ll figure a way out of this together. Blue moon isn’t going down without a fight p>

She sniffled, sounding dejected. “I don’t think I have any fight left in me, Kaene p>

I breathed out heavily, making sure I was strong for her despite my losses.

Just then, I picked up the scent of fresh human blood approaching and turned my head to the direction it was coming from, only to spot Negan walking toward us with a wry smile on his face which was stained with blood alongside his clothes.

“I told you I would protect her.” He blurted casually, folding his arms in front of his chest.

We were currently the last surviving authority figures of the pack, apart from Lycan Davos and p>

Gita.

“Where’s Elder Gita?” I asked, already fearing the worst.

Fortunately, I heard a howl, causing me to fix my gaze ahead.

A white wolf with blue streaks all over her body sprinted toward us, holding a staff in her mouth.

She was smaller than my wolf, but way more ethereal.

When she got to us, she shifted back into her human form, placing the staff back on her right hand.

“I’m glad to see you’re alright, Alpha.” Elder Gita bowed slightly, a warm smile on her face.

I returned her smile, trying to hide the despair trying to seep out.

“There’s a way we can defeat the Hunters in one move.” She went straight to the point, her expression becoming serious.
