The plate held a few dried snacks, peanuts and almonds among them.
Wendy’s grandmother spoke cheerfully. “I don’t have anything good at home. Dominic, just make do with these. I will cook for you later p>

A brand–new photo frame rested on top. In the black–and–white photograph, a young girl smiled brightly, sweet and adorable.
The old woman’s body quivered. Moisture gathered in her clouded eyes. She reached out and turned the photo frame face down.

The aroma was rich and inviting. Though he did not feel hungry, he finished every bite.

As she ate, she spoke softly with her grandmother.

After he left, the old woman returned to the house. She picked up the photo frame from the cabinet and, with her aged hands, stroked the girl’s face in the black–and–white photograph repeatedly, tears sliding down her cheeks.
