He smiled faintly. “But Mommy has lots of money, a big house, and a beautiful car. Daddy has nothing. Daddy only has Lily p>
Her serious tone caught him off guard. His eyes turned red, and he quickly looked away. “Did you finish your homework p>
“Yes! And I checked it more than once. Look, Daddy p>
She proudly handed him her notebook. Dominic wiped the corner of his eye, then took it and flipped through the pages carefully.
It was already nine when Lilith fell asleep. Dominic sat on the couch for a while before heading out. Lighting a cigarette, he started his old Audi and drove out of Riverside Residence. The home’s security was solid; even if Lilith woke up, she couldn’t open the door, and every window had security bars. He wasn’t worried.
He smoked as he drove slowly through the quiet streets. For the first time that night, he felt calm. Then, suddenly, a shadow darted past–just a flash–and only a pair of taillights remained.
Dominic frowned. It looked like a van, and he thought he saw the words ‘Dragon Customs‘ printed on its side. A few blocks later, he spotted the bright sign for ‘Love Me Blue Cheese‘ and pulled over.
As he stepped out, a voice spoke beside him.

A young man stood nearby, his tone cautious, eyes full of hope.
Dominic looked at him and smiled slightly. “What do you think? ”

The young man’s face lit up. He almost jumped with excitement. “I knew it! I knew you could see me! ”
Dominic smiled again and shook his head at the young man’s joy. He walked over to the curb, sat down, and gazed across the street. Inside the restaurant, a plump woman with streaks of white in her hair was wiping the same tables over and over again in the empty dining room.
“She’s my mom,” the young man said softly as he sat beside him.
Dominic nodded. After hearing Autumn’s story, he had already guessed this young man was the woman’s son- the one who had run away from home three years earlier.
“My name’s Theodore Warner,” the young man said. “I’m 16… No, that’s not right. I was 16 three years ago. I guess I’d be nineteen now… ”
