I and Orion sat at dining table, nursing a cup of coffee while we sorted through some company documents.

These past three months had been the happiest of my life. Waking up next to Athena every morning, her body curved against mine, my hand on her growing belly. Feeling our babies kick and move throughout the day
Coming home from the company to find her in the kitchen, trying out new recipes and usually making a mess. The quiet evenings on the couch, her feet in my lap while we watched terrible reality TV that she loved and I pretended to hate.

Not loud. Not the kind of scream that would make a human panic. But I was a wolf, and it was Athena, and I heard it as clearly as if she’d been
standing right next to me.

I was on my feet before I consciously decided to move, my chair crashing backward. Orion was up too, his Alpha instincts triggered by the same
sound.
We hit the stairs at the same time, taking them two at a time, my heart pounding so hard I could feel it in my throat.
“Athena!” I called out, my voice rough with fear.
“In here!” Lily’s voice, high and frightened. “Something’s wrong with Aunt Athena p>
I burst through the nursery door, Orion right behind me.
Athena was on the floor, doubled over, her arms wrapped around her belly. Her face was pale, her forehead beaded with sweat. Lily stood beside her, tears streaming down her face, one small hand on Athena’s shoulder.
“Athena!” I dropped to my knees beside her, my hands hovering over her body, afraid to touch her, afraid of making whatever this was worse. “What’s wrong? What happened p>
“My stomach,” she gasped, her voice tight with pain. “It hurts. Something’s wrong, Tristan. Something’s wrong with the babies p>
Ice flooded my veins. No. No, this couldn’t be happening. Not now. Not when everything had been so perfect.
“Okay, okay,” I said, trying to keep my voice calm even though panic was clawing at my chest. “Can you stand? We need to get you to the
hospital p>
“I don’t know,” she whimpered, and that sound–Athena never whimpered, she was strong and stubborn and fierce–that sound nearly broke me.
I looked at Orion, who had scooped up Lily and was already moving toward the door. “Get the car,” I said, my voice coming through without

“On it,” Orion said, already disappearing down the hallway with Lily in his arms.
I turned back to Athena, my hands shaking as I gently touched her face. She was burning up, her skin hot and clammy under my fingers. Through our bond, I could feel her pain–sharp and cramping, radiating from her abdomen in waves that made me want to double over too.
“I’ve got you, baby,” I said, sliding one arm under her knees and the other behind her back. “I’m going to pick you up, okay? Tell me if it hurts

“Everything hurts,” she sobbed, but she wrapped her arms around my neck
I lifted her as carefully as I could, but she still cried out, her body tensing in my arms. Each sound of pain she made was like a knife to my chest. This was my mate, my wife, the woman carrying my children, and she was hurting and I couldn’t fix it.

“Already on it,” Orion said, phone pressed to his ear as he wove through traffic with the kind of reckless speed that would normally make me yell at him. Now I wanted him to go faster.
Athena moaned, her body curling tighter against me. Through our bond, I felt another wave of pain hit her, stronger this time, and I actually gasped from the intensity of it.
“Breathe,” I told her, trying to remember what we’d learned in those birthing classes. “In through your nose, out through your mouth. That’s it, baby. Just breathe p>
