He spoke from experience. He’d been on the brink of death once before. He knew all too well how terrifying it was to hover in that space between life and death.
“My life is mine, not yours! Just go. I don’t want to see you ever again!” Katrina turned her face away, refusing to look at him.
Xavier rubbed his temples. “Fine, I’ll leave. But please, don’t ever do something like this again. Do you even realize how close you came to dying p>
“I told you, it’s my life-none of your business!” Katrina snapped. “Xavier, we broke up. You told me yourself you didn’t love me. If you don’t care, why bother getting involved in a stranger’s fate? What do I mean to you anymore p>
A subtle frown creased Xavier’s brow.
“Katrina, be reasonable. Go up to the fifth floor of this hospital-look at all the people fighting every day just to stay alive. You have a healthy body, yet you’re throwing it all away. What about your parents? Don’t you owe them more than this p>
“I am being reasonable.” Tears welled up in Katrina’s eyes as her voice rose. “Xavier, don’t you get it? My parents and all our relatives know I came here with you to meet your family. And now, you’re breaking up with me. How am I supposed to face them? What’s the point of going on? How can I look my parents in the eye-or anyone in my family p>
Xavier’s expression was unreadable.
He’d never imagined things would end up like this with Katrina.
Did he love her?
The answer, honestly, was no.
He agreed to date her for two reasons: first, he was at that age when people
settle down; second, Katrina had once saved his life.
In his mind, anyone capable of saving a stranger couldn’t be a bad person.
But reality had other plans.
“So what do you want from me?” Xavier finally asked.
Katrina turned towards him, her eyes desperate. “There are only two paths for me
now: either be with you, or die. I have no other choice p>
“There’s no future for us,” Xavier said, his tone unshakable. With that, he turned and left the room.
As Xavier’s figure receded down the
hallway, Katrina called after him, “Xavier I’ll wait three days Either. you come take me to Hannah birthday celebration, or you come collect my body. Three days Xavier. That’s all p>
“Remember, I once risked my life to save you. Can’t you save me, just this once p>
Xavier’s steps faltered at her last words.
Seeing him pause, Katrina’s eyes narrowed with determination. She was betting everything on this.

Celeste jolted awake from a nightmare, sweat soaking her forehead.
Panic sent her rushing to her parents’ bedroom, banging on the door.

Celeste flung herself into her mother’s arms, sobbing. “Mom, I had that nightmare again. I dreamt I was drowning in the ocean p>

Her father came out, robe thrown over his shoulders, rubbing his eyes. “Still having that nightmare? Didn’t Mr. Lowell say moving to Silverhaven would solve everything p>
The truth was, the Hayes family had uprooted their lives and moved to Silverhaven in Celeste’s senior year for a reason.
