Chapter 118
Elara pulled out the documents Justin had dropped through the windows at her apartment when she wasn’t there and read the facts and data.
She picked up the red marker and highlighted the names of the clubs that appeared repeatedly in the report before taking a sip of the coffee.
“Enjoying the reports?” She heard a familiar voice and rolled her eyes.
“One day you are going to be at my gunpoint, and the reason will be you sneaking behind me,” Elara said.
Justin grinned and plopped on the couch before her.
“Beat me. I waited for your lover boy and brother to leave before entering. I mean, your brother specifically, since the lover boy already knows the truth,” Justin grinned.
Elara rolled her eyes.
“The person you are calling a mere lover boy is the heir to the biggest empire in the nation,” she said before she leaned forward and beckoned him to come closer.
“The report says that authorities have found similar cases from around the club, but could never take action before. What’s the reason?” She asked.
Justin looked at the club and pursed his lips.
“Master groups own the club. The authorities have tried to inspect and investigate the area quite a few times, but the lack of evidence always saves their asses,” Justin explained.
Elara looked at the club’s name, leaning backwards.
If the officers couldn’t do anything about the club even after the suspicion, either they were really good at hiding and cleaning up their mess, or they weren’t trying hard enough.
Elara nodded and bit her bottom lip.
“I want to change the way I work,” Elara said after much thought.
Justin looked up, unsure what she was talking about.
Four years ago, their group had formed for the sole purpose of providing justice to the households that lost their daughters to these sharks who threw them into a business they never wanted to be a part of.
Though they disbanded when Elara left, the sole purpose of their group had always been to provide justice to those girls who could not find it for themselves.
Thus, it was hard to digest that she was planning to change it now. After all, many people were attached to their Hunters gang just for this purpose because they wanted to do good.
“What do you mean?” Justin asked.
Elara sighed.
“Though what we are doing is good stuff, it’s illegal in the end. I want to gain the authorities’ support and their trust and faith in us. Though many officers drop the case because they fear the prominent families, their research is good. I want to be able to have access to them without hacking,” Elara explained.
Justin looked at the girl for some time, finally understanding what she was hinting at.
She was starting to chase fame with her singing career. If her name got involved with anything illegal, everything she had been working hard for would be ruined.
Justin took a deep breath.
“Getting their approval might take time, though. Besides, why would they even agree to legalize our work if they are afraid of everyone? Also, won’t it affect you negatively? They might try to affect your career.” Justin’s question held weightage, and Elara knew it.
Thus, rather than answering immediately, she walked to the kitchen to brew some more coffee.
“I am not chasing clout here. Even if I make the process legal, my name shall never come to the top. And for that very reason, you’ll be the new boss of the Nocturnal Hunters,” Elara said.
As soon as Justin heard those words, the papers dropped from his hand, scattering around.
“You have got to be kidding me,” he said.
“Does my face say I am joking? This is a serious matter, Justin. Too many people are around me. They easily link me to the association, and it keeps putting our identity in jeopardy. That’s the last thing I want. I’ll guide you; don’t worry.” Elara walked to the living room, gathered the papers, and then stood straight.
Justin shook his head.
Though he promised to dedicate his life to whatever Elara would be doing to help others, this was too much. It wasn’t just about holding the boss position but also carrying the risk that came with it.
And it wasn’t about life.
He was used to being reckless. If he got exposed, there was no problem; there never had been because he wasn’t the boss.
The boss was a girl no one would ever guess about. Thus, their identity was metaphorically always saved.
Heck, 90% of their group didn’t even know who their boss was.
“No. Think of something else. Create a dummy and link this to Macros’s group or Xylon’s group; I don’t care. But you’ll remain the boss. Not me. It’s not a responsibility I am ready for,” Justin said, holding his ground.
Elara massaged the area between her brows and was about to scold him for chickening out like that when her phone rang with an incoming call.
She looked at the caller ID, and her brows furrowed.
Why was this man calling her out of the blue at almost midnight?
“Hello?” she asked.
“I saw the video,” he said.
“What kind of video?” She asked, confused, raising her hand to signal Justin not to say anything useless.
The man nodded and walked to the kitchen to look for some snacks to annoy her, a grin spreading across his face when he saw her expression.
“The video of Sean barking like a dog,” Trevor said.
Elara briefly closed her eyes before sighing.
“I saw it too. But what I don’t understand is why you would call me for something like that.” Elara almost wanted to smack the back of Justin’s head when she saw him taking out pudding from the fridge that she was saving for tomorrow.
“I don’t know. My sister smiled when she saw the video. It has been so long since I saw her smiling. She didn’t just smile. Trevor took a deep breath.
“She laughed, Elara, until she couldn’t and started crying. The entire family got worried and took her to her doctor. He said she was finally coming out of her trauma now that her emotions were released,” Trevor said.
Elara listened patiently, feeling a bit glad that there was someone else who liked the video as much as she did.
“And?” Elara drew out when the man said nothing.
“I know you are behind it. I just can’t prove how, but I know. Even Sean has this hunch, and he has been going mad about it. I don’t care if you agree or lie to me; all I want to say is that I am really grateful to you, Elara Frost,” Trevor said.
Elara looked at Justin, thinking things through before she smiled.
“You’re welcome,” she said before ending the call.
She turned to Justin again.
“You know what, I think you are right. I should remain the boss. The praise is a bit too hard to pass,” she said before going inside her room.
Justin, who just took a spoonful of pudding in his mouth, narrowed his eyes in confusion.
Is she suffering from some kind of bipolar disorder? He shuddered even thinking about it.
It would be so hard to handle her emotions if that were true.
At the same time, Andrew, who had been trying to dial Elara’s number but ended up with the same robotic voice that indicated she had blocked his number, threw the phone across the room in frustration.
