Chapter 28

In the hospital, for the first time in his life since he started working with his boss, Alen saw a rare concern on his boss’s face as he sat in the chair beside the woman who he said saved his life today.

Despite having ten bodyguards, a woman stepped before him to take the bullet wound for him.

It was unbelievable.

Why? Because he was a man who had always been aware of his surroundings and carried two guns himself. If he wanted, he could’ve shot the man first. Then how did someone save him?

Was it because he was caught off guard? If that were the case, it would also be a rarity in itself.

“Sir, you should eat something. The doctor said the anesthesia might wear off till morning.” Alen tried to pacify his boss, telling him to move away from Elara, or he would surely bore a hole in her head with the intense gaze he had been using to stare at her.

“You guys leave. I’ll stay,” Daniel said, his gaze not moving away from Elara for a second, even when he talked to his secretary.

George, who had been outside the ward talking to the doctor about the complications and any precautions they might need to take, entered the room with a serious expression.

The bullet didn’t exactly pierce her shoulder bone. It went through the side of the bone, which was a relief because otherwise it would’ve been hard to heal.

“You can leave, Mr. Daniel. I am here with her,” George said.

“Why?” Daniel asked, and George narrowed his eyes.

“What do you mean?” He asked.

Daniel turned to look at George.

“Why are you here? She saved my life. So it’s natural for me to be grateful and be here to take care of her. What reason do you have?” He asked, his gaze observing George’s every move.

George’s stance stiffened.

He could just come clean with the truth and scream to his face that it was his sister on the bed who risked her life for him, and he wanted nothing less than to punch him in the face for even asking and questioning their relationship.

But he kept his facade and nodded.

“She is my friend’s sister, and he entrusted her with me when he went abroad for his business meetings. She is under my care,” George explained.

Daniel nodded in understanding.

“In that case also, you need not worry about her safety, George. She wouldn’t be safer anywhere than she is with me. You can leave,” Daniel said, his gaze challenging, ready to fight anyone who would defy him in that moment.

George looked at the woman on the bed, who was still under the anesthesia’s effect and probably would feel scared if she woke up to someone else by her side.

She always hated hospitals and their smell. After their grandmother died in the hospital because of a doctor’s misconduct p>

George massaged the area between his forehead, annoyed. If only he didn’t need to protect her identity from this particular man because of p>

George looked at Antonio, who had been silently standing in the corner of the room, blaming himself for everything that had happened.

“Stay with her. Call me as soon as she is awake with no exceptions. I can’t take any risks with her life. I’ll return every two hours to check up on her,” George said.

“That won’t be necessary—” Daniel started, but George glared at the man.

“I insist,” He nearly spat the words before nodding at Antonio and leaving.

Alen watched the man leave and shook his head.

“Antonio, my men are leaving. Can you bring me some coffee?” Daniel said, his dark gaze indicating he wouldn’t tolerate any nonsense from anyone.

Antonio looked at Elara, a bit reluctant to leave her with this strange, dangerous guy, but he knew if the man wanted to harm her, they wouldn’t be able to protect her like this either.

He needed to trust Mr. George’s judgment because this man was really harmful; he wouldn’t leave his sister in his care, no matter how powerful he was.

Once Antonio left the room, Alen turned to his boss.

“For someone who just claims that she is his friend’s sister and under his care, he was awfully concerned about her, no? I have never seen him like this p>

Then again, I never saw you like this either. Alen didn’t speak the last line aloud and looked at his boss.

Daniel looked at the door before shifting his gaze back to Elara.

“That’s not just any man. He is her brother,” Daniel said.

Alen raised his brows in surprise.

“Her brother? If that’s true, why did he lie to us? He could’ve just said so, and you would’ve let him stay, right?” The subordinate asked, multiple questions rising in his chest.

“He is protecting her. I understand him,” Daniel said before he leaned forward and grabbed Elara’s hand, massaging the back of her hand with his knuckles.

He pulled out the bracelet she had been wearing in the morning, which had come off while she was being brought to the hospital, and placed it on her hand.

“Regardless of that, it was quite disrespectful of him. Wait. I didn’t even know Frost’s daughter was alive. There were quite a few rumors four years ago, but then it was also rumored she was dead,” Alen said, shaking his head.

The life of riches was truly confusing, like a complex web to figure out. There was a twist at every end.

“I know,” Daniel didn’t explain further and looked at her face.

He hadn’t really expected her to see him at the exhibition.

He hadn’t expected himself to recognize her so easily either. Those eyes—how could he forget those eyes, those hands that held him once with so much affection?

It didn’t take him even a second to recognize the woman hidden behind the man’s facade. And to say teasing her was quite a new hobby he was developing would be an understatement.

“Wake up soon, Elara. There are many ways I want to torment you,” Daniel said, intertwining his fingers with hers.

Alen, standing at the side, looked at his boss with a strange look.

Sir, if you talk like this, even the person on the brink of waking up would prefer unconsciousness. He wanted to say to his boss, pitying his low EQ with a sigh.
