Samantha sat paralyzed on the ground, shaking violently. She sobbed into her hands, her makeup a smeared mess and her breathing ragged.
Alaina pointed a finger directly at her son’s face, her voice trembling but sharp as a razor. “Do you have any idea that six years ago, this she–wolf took a sixty–million–dollar check from Howard and dumped you the very same night to flee the country p>
Cassian’s pupils constricted violently.
In that instant, he felt like he’d been nailed to the spot. His blood ran cold, and the wolf inside him let out a sudden, explosive snarl.
He stared at Samantha in disbelief, his gaze turning bone–chilling.
Seeing her son’s reaction, Alaina realized the truth instantly.
Cassian had never heard that recording from back then.
If he had, he wouldn’t have dragged this out until Trista was pushed to the edge of termination.
“Cassian, it wasn’t like that! Let me explain-” Samantha cried out in denial, crawling toward him on her knees and grabbing the hem of his pants.
Cassian slowly recovered from the shock.
He suppressed his spiraling emotions and leaned down to pull Samantha up, though his grip was as cold as iron.
“Not here,” he said, his voice low and controlled.
This was a busy intersection with eyes everywhere.
He wouldn’t allow any Ironthorn scandal to fester here, and he certainly wouldn’t let himself become the laughingstock of tomorrow’s headlines.
Alaina shook her head in disappointment, pulling Wynn into the car.
As the door slammed shut, it felt like the last bit of warmth between them was being locked

He didn’t give her another look before pushing the door open and stepping out.
Samantha started to follow him to explain further, but Cassian slammed the door shut.
She gripped the handle, frozen in her seat.
The tears on her face hadn’t even dried, but her eyes turned icy in an instant.
She knew. After Alaina’s stunt, Cassian’s doubt had finally taken root.
