Looking at this group of greedy, low–life relatives, Samantha felt a wave of pure resentment.
She pointed a finger at George and Angela. “George, Angela–if I hadn’t risked Cassian ripping me to shreds six years ago to funnel money out of Ironthorn for you, do you think you’d own a house in a prime L.A. zip code? Do you think those two mediocre sons of yours would be in a top–tier academy? Every brick in that house was paid for with the blood and sweat I clawed out of Cassian’s pocket p>
“The food you eat, the clothes on your backs, the kids‘ tuition–where do you think that came from?” Samantha shrieked. “Fine, call me names. Say I’m a social climber. But I did it all so this family wouldn’t be rotting in the gutter anymore p>
Angela didn’t skip a beat, sneering back at her. “Save the sob story, Samantha! We’re in this mess because of you. Give us the money to relocate now, or I’m making your life a living hell p>
Passersby were starting to stare. Samantha gritted her teeth against her rage, pulled out her phone, and transferred a hundred thousand dollars to them.
“Take it,” she spat. “It’s all I have until Cassian gives me the rest of the check p>
Looking at their insatiable faces, she gave them a final warning. “Remember this: if I’m good, you’re good. If I go down, you’re all finished. The Ironthorns knows the truth about Algernon. I’m already drowning, so don’t you dare make it worse. Even if someone puts a knife to your throat, you only say three words: ‘I don’t know p>
After parting ways with her family, Samantha couldn’t sit still.
Madison was hounding her for debts, Alaina was squeezing her family for money, and now her own brother was shaking her down.
If she didn’t get that check from Cassian soon, she’d lose her mind before Howard even woke up.
She couldn’t get through to Cassian, and every time she called Humphrey, he claimed Cassian was in meetings.
The silence was starting to terrify her.
Around noon, she staked out the hospital where Trista worked. Sure enough, Cassian pulled up.
The second he stepped out of the car, she ran to him, tears streaming down her face. “Cassian, please! You have to help me. I have nowhere left to go p>
Cassian traded a look with Humphrey.
Samantha pointed to a restaurant across the street. “Cassian, I have so much to tell you. Can we just sit down and talk? Please p>
Ten minutes later, they were in a booth by the window.
Samantha didn’t even look at the menu.
“Cassian, why aren’t you taking my calls? Your grandfather knows the truth. Once he wakes up, he’s going to kill me. What am I supposed to do p>

Right then. Trista and Elias walked into the restaurant with Sayer. They spotted the two of them instantly.
“Do you want to go somewhere else?” Elias asked softly.
Trista looked at the booth right behind Cassian’s and said calmly, “No. Let’s sit right there p>
The moment Cassian saw Trista and Elias approaching with the pup, he instinctively yanked his hand out of Samantha’s grip.
Seeing Cassian’s face darken, Samantha scrambled to her feet to explain. “Miss Holmes, please don’t misunderstand. I asked Cassian here to discuss some urgent matters p>
Trista set her bag down, her voice dripping with sarcasm. “Misunderstand what? Misunderstand how perfectly your fingers were interlaced just now p>
Cassian sat there, his fists clenched so hard the veins on the back of his hands stood out.
Samantha tried to play the victim, stammering, “Miss Holmes… do you really have to be so mean p>
At that moment, Sayer tugged on Trista’s hand to get her to sit and chirped, “Mommy p>
Samantha’s eyes locked onto Elias and the
pup.
“You haven’t even ended your mating with Cassian, yet you’re out in public with another man and his kid? You’re actually playing ‘Mommy‘ to someone else’s brat she raised her voice. “Have you even thought about how Cassian feels p>
Trista sighed, looking at her with bored eyes. “This is an Ironthorn’s tradition. You haven’t joined the pack yet, so I don’t blame you for not knowing the rules p>
The comment hit Samantha like a slap, leaving her pale.
Trista glanced at Cassian, then reached out and physically hauled him up from the booth. “Cassian, why don’t you have a heart–to–heart with your little mistress about how it feels to ‘gain a son‘ for free p>
Cassian looked at Trista with a pained, complicated expression.
He caught her hand and tried to soothe her. “Don’t say things you don’t mean. Just have a nice lunch. I have an emergency to handle; I’m leaving p>
He gave Elias a polite nod, shot Samantha a stern, warning look, and walked out.
Samantha didn’t even try to stay dignified; she bolted out of the restaurant right after him.
