Cassian shot the Gamma a warning look, and the guards finally stepped aside, though they clearly weren’t happy about it.
Alistair led Trista and her parents out of the estate with calm, arrogant stride.
Cassian walked them to the door and whispered to Trista, “Go home and rest. I’ll be back as soon as I settl things here p>
Trista didn’t even give him a sidelong glance. She climbed straight into Alistair’s car with her parents.
After watching the taillights disappear, Cassian turned back to the house.
Humphrey rushed over and whispered in his ear, “Howard’s men dumped Samantha in the ‘No Man’s Land‘ out by the border. Our team is heading there now to intercept p>
Cassian dismissed him with a wave.
Inside, Alaina slammed the lineage report onto the table in front of him. “You lied to your own blood for a mutt! You’re looking for a death sentence p>
“Grandpa, Mom, Dad… the kid isn’t Ironthorn. I’m through lying about it,” Cassian said, finally laying his cards on the table.
“You bastard!” Howard roared, swinging his cane. It caught Cassian across the forehead, drawing blood instantly.
Cassian didn’t flinch.
“Samantha saved my life in college. When Grandpa forced her into exile behind my back, she took the money, but she never spent a cent of it,” Cassian’s voice was raspy.
“She was brutalized overseas. That child is her living nightmare. She only came back to L.A. because she was desperate. She begged me to help her hide her past so she could start over p>
He lowered his head. “I know I handled this like hell. I regret being weak. But it’s done, and I’ll take the fallout myself p>
He looked up, his voice dropping an octave. “Grandpa, Samantha is still useful to me. No one touches her p>
He turned to his parents. “I failed Trista. I know that. I’ll spend the rest of my life making it up to her until she forgives me p>
“You broke her wolf soul, and you think she’s going to grow old with you?” Alaina snapped. “Wake up p>
Cassian’s expression remained hauntingly calm. “Mom, if it really is over, I won’t take another mate. I won’t have another heir. I’ll stay in this territory alone until the day I die p>
He walked out without looking back.

At 3:30 in the morning, a private chopper touched down the Ironthorn helipad.
Cassian was leaning against his car smoking, his white shirt unbuttoned at the collar, looking disheveled but lethal.
Samantha stumbled out of the cabin, crying as she tried to throw herself into his arms.
Cassian stepped aside, and she hit the pavement, kneeling in the dirt.
She grabbed his pant leg, shrieking, “Cassian, I almost died out there! That old man really tried to kill me p>
“I brought you back. I can keep you alive,” Cassian said coldly.
“I’ve got another apartment for you. Move in with Algernon. If you need anything, call Humphrey p>
As she climbed into Humphrey’s car, Samantha watched Cassian’s silhouette through the window.
She was convinced he still loved her.
In her mind, his coldness was just a front to deal with his family’s pressure.
After all, Trista had lost the baby and Howard was furious–if Cassian really wanted to be done with her, he wouldn’t have snatched her back from the border at the last second.
“Men are all the same,” she thought. “They always want what they can’t have p>
She swore to herself she’d use this chance to officially take the Luna throne.
Late at night, Cassian returned to the villa.
Cassian returned to a house that was pitch black and silent. He flipped the light switch, feeling the weight of the day.
While changing his shoes, he noticed the rack looked empty. He
ent down and opened the shoe cabinet.
Panic flared in his chest. He sprinted into the living room and saw the master bedroom door wide open.
He slowed his pace as he walked in. The bed was perfectly made–untouched.
“Trista p>
He shouted her name as he ran to the walk–in closet and yanked open her wardrobe.
It was empty. Every stitch of clothing she owned was gone.

Cassian collapsed onto the floor, the strength leaving his legs.

He reached into his pocket and pulled out the glass pendant with the photo of their lost child. He stared at the tiny image, his eyes burning red.
He pressed the pendant against his heart and closed his eyes. Tears finally spilled down his cheeks.
He knew. Deep in his gut, he knew. Trista wasn’t coming back this time.
