Third Person’s POV

Alistair flicked his prayer beads, the obsidian clacking sharply. “Trista is young, gorgeous, and has a hell of

lot of heart. I really like her. I think I’ll be seeing a lot more of her from now on p>

Watching Cassian’s nails practically dig into his own palms, Alistair added one last twist of the knife. “If ‘ou’ve got a problem with that, feel free to try and talk her out of it. Let’s see if she actually wants to stay way from me p>

Cassian turned his head away, letting out a low, guttural growl. “Get out p>

Once Alistair left, Cassian sat in the suffocating silence of his room.

The two nurses Trista had hired could feel the explosive Alpha aura radiating from inside; they huddled y the door, too terrified to step foot in the room.

When Wynn and Fred arrived with lunch, Cassian was staring blankly at the ceiling, looking completely vrecked.

Wynn tugged on Fred’s sleeve, whispering, “Fred, look at him. He looks so pathetic p>

‘red shrugged, not showing much sympathy. “He was bound to hit a wall eventually. This is the mess he nade for himself p>

He walked over to the bed and gave Cassian a sharp poke in the side.

Cassian shot him a dead–eyed look but said nothing.

red turned to Wynn. “I’m gonna have a man–to–man with him. Why don’t you go find Trista? Let her take you to the cafeteria for a change of pace so you don’t have to stare at this sour face p>

Wynn hesitated, glancing at Cassian.

Fred just grabbed her bag and pushed her toward the door. “Go on. Have some fun and come back later p>

Once she was gone, Fred sat on the edge of the bed and lowered his voice. “I’ve been thinking. Alistair is a ghost–the guy doesn’t leave tracks. How did you know Trista was in trouble at Shadowfang p>

Cassian stayed as still as a log, offering nothing.

“Alistair is technically your uncle,” Fred guessed boldly. “You didn’t actually plant a mole inside the Shadowfangs, did you p>

Cassian stared into space, his voice flat. “This is L.A. If I want to keep tabs on someone, there isn’t a square inch of this city I don’t see p>

Fred rolled his eyes. “So you can track the whole city. Big deal. You got stabbed through the gut for Trista and she still won’t give you the time of day p>

Cassian closed his eyes.

Finished

He was stubbornly convinced that this was just a temporary rough patch–that the bond between wolves didn’t break that easily. He believed they’d find their way back.

Fred saw that look of delusional devotion and kept digging. “Don’t kid yourself. With Trista’s personality, once she cuts you out, you’re dead to her. You could be burning in an incinerator and she wouldn’t even blink p>

Cassian tuned him out, turning his head to “rest p>

He convinced himself that Trista pushing him into danger or saving Alistair first was just her venting her

anger.

He was certain her love for him was bone–deep, and if he was just patient enough, his little wolf would eventually come home.

Suddenly, the door burst open. Wynn ran in, panicking. “Fred! It’s bad! Grandpa and Dad took the guards to Silverlight p>

Cassian’s eyes snapped open. His face went pale. He bolted upright so fast his stitches tore, a wave of dizziness nearly sending him face–first onto the floor.

At the Silverlights, by the time Trista made it home, Howard and Wilmot had already locked down the property with a full security detail.

The yard was crawling with Ironthorn guards, and the air was thick with hostile auras.

Howard was sitting in the main chair of the living room as if he owned the place.

Wilmot stood over Trista’s parents, the tension in the room at sub–zero temperatures.

Randolph and Ulva looked terrified, immediately pulling Trista behind them the second she walked in.

Trista scanned the room, her eyes landing on a shattered vase on the floor. Her gaze went cold. “Howard. Wilmot. Is Ironthorn officially making a move into private property in broad daylight now p>

Wilmot pointed a finger at her, his voice a hard warning. “Trista, stay the hell away from Cassian. Don’t you dare think you can mess up the alliance with the Tundra Pack p>

Trista took a deep breath, her pheromones vibrating with rage. She hit back, word for word. “Mr. Simmons, your son is the one who chose to play the hero. Out of respect for Alaina and Wynn, I got him to the hospital, I paid the bill, and I hired his nurses. If you aren’t satisfied, name a price for compensation and I’ll pay it. Other than that, what do you want p>

Wilmot let out a sharp, mocking scoff. “Cassian is the fronthorn Alpha. He spilled enough blood for you to fill this room. Look at this pathetic, cramped house–what exactly do you have that could possibly be

worth his life? ”

Trista didn’t back down. Her aura turned razor–sharp. “I can’t afford it, but Shadowfang can. Cassian got hurt on Alistair’s turf. If you’re looking to settle a debt, Alistair is more than happy to pay whatever you think you’re owed p>
