The words hit like a serrated blade to the chest.
The familiar, crushing agony swept through him so fast his vision went black. He stumbled, catching the edge of her desk just to stay upright.
As she turned to leave, Cassian doubled over in pain, reaching out one last time. “Trista… my stomach. It

She didn’t even pause. “This is a Healing Center,” she said, her voice like ice. “There are people here paid to reat you p>
She took another step toward the door.

A heavy, wet sound echoed behind her.
Trista froze. She turned back to find Cassian hunched over the desk, coughing up a terrifying amount of >right crimson blood.
As a doctor, her instincts took over; she dropped the breakfast and rushed to steady him. “What happened p>
Cassian gripped the desk with one hand and reached out with the other, his trembling fingers locking
around her wrist.
His eyes were bloodshot, his voice a jagged, sobbing mess. “Trista… you still care. Don’t you p>
They were inches apart.
But the moment passed. Trista snapped back into professional mode, her eyes turning flat. “ Cassian, I’m a doctor and this is a hospital. I’m helping you because I don’t let people die on my floor. That’s it p>
“I don’t believe you!” Cassian shook his head violently, looking like a drowning man.
Trista pulled her hand away and stepped back, creating a deliberate void between them. “Cassian, if you’re going to misinterpret a medical necessity as ‘caring, then next time I’ll make sure to look the other way. ”

Cassian finally snapped. He lunged forward and wrapped his arms around her from behind, squeezing her with a frantic strength that felt like he was trying to pull her into his very marrow.
“Trista!” he roared, sounding like a wounded animal. “We grew up together for twenty years! We were married for three! Are you telling me that after all that, I don’t even rank against a guy like Elias whom you’ve known for five minutes p>
Trista didn’t struggle. She didn’t even get angry.
She simply turned around slowly and looked him straight in the eye.

Her voice was calm–the kind of calm that’s meant to kill. “So tell me, Cassian… during those three years, didn’t I rank lower than your precious she–wolf, Samantha, every single day p>
With that, she picked up the breakfast and walked out of the office without a second glance.
The strength drained out of Cassian’s body instantly. He collapsed onto the floor.
Trista heard the heavy thud behind her. She didn’t slow down.
Without a hint of hesitation, she flagged down a passing nurse, her voice crisp and professional. “Code Blue in my office. Massive gastric hemorrhage. Get him to the ER now p>
Medical staff swarmed the office, lifting a semi–conscious Cassian onto a gurney.
Wynn arrived just in time to see her brother being wheeled away like a broken ragdoll.
In the hallway, she saw Trista standing at the corner, breakfast bag in hand. Trista gave one indifferent glance toward the ER doors before turning her back and vanishing into the shadows of the clinic.
Wynn rushed into the office, seeing the unopened avocado toast on the desk and the terrifying pool of
blood on the floor.
Her heart felt like it was being squeezed in a vise.
She backed out, sobbing, and sprinted toward the ER.
As she passed Trista, her tear–filled eyes locked onto the doctor’s face. She didn’t say anything, but her gaze was heavy with resentment.
Trista watched the elevator doors slide shut. She looked away from the glowing red numbers, her expression unreadable, and walked away.
8:00 PM. Intensive Care.
Cassian drifted back to consciousness. He looked around the room–his parents and his sister were there, but the one face he was looking for was missing.

“Stability,” Dr. Alger said, looking directly at Cassian. “Regular meals, yes, but the emotional state is the priority. When an Alpha’s mate bond is severed, there’s often an extreme physiological rejection. If he doesn’t find some peace, that ulcer is going to perforate, and we won’t be able to stop it p>
