Deirdre left me lying there on the floor.
But not before she delivered one final, swift kick to my side.
“Maybe you had some control over me in Nightwolf.” She towered over me, a dark shadow blotting out the candlelight. “But not here, slave. Here, I’m the one who’s in charge of you. You’re just the whore who will push out the Rogue King’s pups p>
With that, she turned and strode out of the tent. The two slaves followed her, chains clanking. No one helped me. Not even when was curled into a fetal position on the ground, clutching my belly.

I felt her strength pulse through me-just for a moment, but it was enough to snap me out of my daze. I pushed myself to my hands and knees, then sat up fully. I took a deep breath and looked down. A sob tore from my throat, which I stifled with my hand.
Red. So much red. Blood was gushing from between my legs now.
Was I miscarrying?
“What do I do?” I whispered, clutching my belly and looking around frantically. I couldn’t call for help-Asher would probably just let my baby die so he could replace it with one of his own. I had to deal with this by myself.
My wolf retreated, curling herself around the little form in my belly. “I’ll hold it back,” she said, her voice becoming frantic now in a way I hadn’t heard before. “Get to the window. Now p>
“The… window…?” My head was spinning. The blood loss was too much, the pain too great. But I forced myself to look around, and I spotted the small flap in the side of the tent I hadn’t noticed before. It was really just a sliver covered with mesh, but it was enough to let some light in.
I wasn’t sure why my wolf wanted me to do this, but I crawled over to the window, one hand still clutching my belly, The blood continued to gush, leaving a thin trail behind me. I gritted my teeth and slumped closer until I was just beneath the window.

My breath caught. I clasped my hands together and sat back on my heels, swallowing down the cramp that wrenched my gut. “Please, Moon Goddess,” I whispered, just as I had done with Gideon’s wound. “Please… Please save my baby p>
Nothing happened. I screwed my eyes shut as tight as I could and clenched my hands together, willing her to hear me. If she was even real.

Suddenly, a strong gust of wind blew through the camp, bringing with it the smell of meat and blood and dirt, but also the scent of fresh air and pine needles. The canvas of my tent shook, and I heard raised voices outside as someone’s chair inevitably blew over into a fire pit.
But I didn’t stop praying. If anything, I prayed harder. I imagined the Moon Goddess’s pale form, just as she had looked that night in my dreams. I envisioned her long, floating hair, her crown set upon her white brow. I remembered her gentle smile and the warmth of her gaze.
Most of all, I imagined her standing in the tent with me, wrapping her arms around me… and saving my baby.
“Yes… Yes, I can feel it!” my wolf cried. A moment later, I felt a warmth envelop me like a childhood blanket.
For those brief seconds, I swore-I knew this feeling. It was a feeling as old as I was, even before my memories began. It was a blanket embroidered with a crescent moon. It was a shaft of moonlight peeking through the trees, protecting me in a bubble of silver until the wolves stopped circling me and my adoptive mother stumbled upon
It was the feeling of peace that came when my mother slipped me into her sweater, right against her chest, and carried me home.
