“That’s it, dear girl,” I heard her voice whisper. No-three voices. Three women. My adoptive mother. My biological mother. And the Moon Goddess.
When I opened my eyes, I found that the slender moon had appeared from behind the clouds. A thin shaft of light was shining directly onto that tiny window. My pain was gone, and I’d stopped bleeding. My wolf was purring with contentment, still wrapped around the little life within my belly, but my child had stopped writhing in pain.
I stared up at the moon in wonder.
Was it true? Was I the Lycan princess like Asher had claimed?
Was I truly a descendent of the Moon Goddess?

Zara didn’t break her gaze away from me, not even to look at Reynaud as he struggled under my grip.
My wolf didn’t trust her. Neither did I. But I was desperate. If she knew anything, anything at all about where Avery had gone, then I needed to hear her out.
“Fine,” I said, releasing Reynaud and stepping away. I saw him scamper off out of the corner of my eyes, but I didn’t pay him any mind. “What do you know p>
Zara’s lips curved. “Don’t you want to know my conditions first p>
“Go ahead.” Whatever it was, I had little intention of following through. I just
wanted the information.
“In exchange for me telling you where Avery is,” Zara said, checking her nails, “I want you to send her mother back to Silvermoon for punishment. She’s still an Omega slave. She belongs to me p>
My nostrils flared. Avery would never forgive me if I did something like that. I would never forgive myself. Avery always cared about her mother above all else, even above herself. Even if handing her mother back to the people who had abused her would mean getting Avery back, it wouldn’t be worth it. Avery would be furious and would probably just endanger herself again trying to get her mother back, which was exactly what Zara wanted.
“How do I know you won’t lie to me?” I asked.

“I figured you would say that.” Zara reached into her pocket and pulled something out. It was a necklace. It was gold, with three large diamonds hanging from it.
“Recognize this?” Zara asked, shoving the necklace in my face.
No. I didn’t recognize it. But I didn’t respond right away, too curious to see where this was going.
“It’s Avery’s,” Zara said. “Or rather, it was. It must have fallen off when she was taken. I found it close to the rogue camp p>
She dropped the necklace like a piece of trash. On instinct, I caught it and studied it. The diamonds were heavy and perfectly polished. I had never seen Avery wear this, not even at a formal event. As far as I knew, she didn’t care for diamonds.
Then again, I had never asked.
But this was definitely not something she would wear. It was too perfect, too expensive. She rarely even wore jewelry, and when she did, it was delicate and sentimental. The last piece I’d seen her wear was on the night of our mating ceremony, and it had been a simple leather necklace with a handmade glass bead on it. Nothing at all like this one.
I knew, in that moment, that Zara was bluffing.
“Avery would never wear something like this,” I said, throwing the necklace back at her. “She doesn’t like this style. It’s too garish, not at all suited to gardening p>
Zara caught the necklace and blinked as if surprised. She didn’t speak for a moment. Then: “You care about her p>
“Of course I care about her.” I turned on my heel. This conversation was over. She had nothing of value to tell me-just lie after lie after fucking lie. “She’s my mate p>
