Chapter 306
Avery’s POV
By morning, I knew what I had to do.
I couldn’t escape on my own. Not with guards watching my every move, not with Asher breathing down my neck, not with this silver ring keeping my wolf subdued. I needed help.
And the only person who could help me was Gideon.
I hated that, after everything, I still needed him. But this wasn’t about love anymore. We needed to survive-both of us. Despite what he’d said, I didn’t want him to die here. I couldn’t just leave him.
Once we escaped, I would take my mother and disappear into the human lands. Gideon could have his freedom, and I would have mine. We would never have to see each other again.
But first, I had to find a way to get us both out of here.
I spent the morning pacing my tent, running through the plan in my head. I needed angelica. It was the only way to trigger Gideon’s transformation. It would force his wolf to break through the silver’s hold and give him the strength to fight back.
Angelica was a common enough plant in this region. I was sure I could find some. All it would take was one flower to trigger the Demonblood.
It was dangerous and reckless, but it was also the only way to get the fuck out of here.
Around midday, I called for my guard. He appeared in the doorway, looking bored as he picked at the dirt under his nails with a small knife.
“What is it?” he asked without looking at me p>
“I need to collect more herbs,” I said. I placed my hand on my stomach. “For the baby. The doctor said I should be taking certain plants to ensure a healthy pregnancy p>
The guard frowned and looked at me through his brows. “You just went out yesterday p>
“I didn’t collect enough.” I widened my eyes, trying to look helpless. “Please. I’m worried about the baby. If something happens because I didn’t get the right herbs p>
He sighed. “Fine. But we’re not going far. I’m sick of following you around all day

when I have plenty of better things to be doing p>
Right… Like staring at women and drinking until he was stupid.
But I forced a smile.
“Of course p>
He led me out of the tent and toward the edge of the camp. I carried my basket, keeping my head down as we passed the cages. Gideon was still there, slumped against the bars. He didn’t look up as I walked by.
Good. I didn’t want to see him right now anyway.

We entered the forest, and I immediately started scanning the underbrush. The guard stayed close, watching me with suspicion. I ignored him and knelt beside a patch of chamomile, pretending to examine the flowers.
“How long is this going to take?” he asked.
“Not long.” I plucked a few stems and placed them in my basket. “I just need a few more things p>
I moved deeper into the forest, searching. Where was it? Angelica usually grew near water, in shaded areas where the soil was damp. I spotted a creek up ahead and veered toward it.
The guard followed, grumbling under his breath.
Finally, I spotted a cluster of white flowers growing along the bank of the creek. Tall stalks, jagged leaves. Angelica.
I knelt beside it and plucked several stems, ensuring I got a few good flowers. Perfect. I placed the stems in my basket, covering them with the chamomile.
The guard was looking at something in the trees, distracted. I took the opportunity to scan the area for anything else useful.
Just as I was about to leave, I spotted a low-growing plant with dark purple berries and bell-shaped flowers that made me freeze,
Nightshade p>
But this was not the common variety. This was something rarer. Belladonna nigrum. Death’s Whisper.
I’d read about it in one of my herbology books back at Nightwolf. It was known for inducing a death-like state-slow pulse, shallow breathing, cold skin. To anyone

who didn’t know better, the person appeared dead. But they weren’t. After a few hours, the effects would wear off, and they would wake up as if nothing had happened.
It was dangerous. If the dosage was wrong, it could actually kill someone. But if used correctly…
I glanced at the guard. He was still distracted, picking at something stuck in his teeth with the same knife he’d used to clean his nails.
Quickly, I reached out and plucked a handful of the berries, slipping them into my basket beneath the other plants. Then, I grabbed a few of the leaves for good
measure.
This could be useful. Very useful. If I needed to fake my death to escape Asher, or if I needed to disappear in the human lands without anyone coming after me…
“Are you done yet?” the guard called out.
“Almost.” I stood and brushed the dirt from my knees. “Just one more thing p>
I collected a few more harmless plants-lavender, mint, some wild rosemary, and, of course, peppermint to counteract the effects of the angelica-to make it look legitimate. Then, I turned back to the guard.
“Okay. I’m ready p>
He grunted and gestured for me to follow him. We walked back through the forest, and I clutched my basket tightly.
By tonight, I would give Gideon those angelica flowers to eat. And when he did, all hell would break loose.
We reached the camp, and the guard escorted me back to my tent. I thanked him and stepped inside, setting my basket down on the table.

My hands were shaking, but I wiped them on the front of my skirt and took a deep breath. Now was not the time for hesitation. Not like last night.
Tonight. It had to be tonight. I couldn’t wait any longer. Neither could Gideon, or my baby,
The plan was simple. I would slip the angélica into Gideon’s cage after dark. Once his wolf took over, he would be able to break free from his cage. The chaos would give me the opportunity to slip into Asher’s tent,
There, I would do what needed to be done.

And once Gideon and I had escaped from camp and were far enough away, once we were safe, I’d part ways with him. He could go back to Nightwolf. I would take my mother and disappear into the human lands
It wasn’t perfect. There were a dozen things that could go wrong. But it was the only chance I had.
I pulled the angelica from my basket and carefully removed the petals, ensuring I picked only the best, most potent ones for Gideon to consume. There could be no mistakes tonight; he had to transform. This had to work.
Then, I examined the nightshade berries. They were small, about the size of peas, and dark as ink. I counted them. Eight berries. Enough for a single dose, maybe two if I was careful.
I tucked them into a small pouch and hid it in the bodice of my dress. Just in case.
The sun was already starting to set. In a few hours, the camp would be quiet. The guards would be drowsy from their evening meal. The rogues would be drunk or asleep.
That was when I would make my move.
I sat down on my bed and took a deep breath. My heart was pounding, but my mind was clear.
Tonight, I was getting the fuck out of here.
