Avery’s skills could be incredible, but my rational mind had no way to explain them. Pretending nothing strange had happened was easier than admitting that gods existed and had the power to interfere in our lives.
No one else even knew I had been wounded, much less that she had helped save me with magical lunar healing.
On the plus side, if I kept Avery locked in her room, no one would ever find out.
Tempting.
But as much as I hated to admit it, it really wasn’t an option. I did need her as my Luna, which meant she needed to be able to do her duties as a free wolf. If anything, her connection to the Moon was just another sign that she truly was the Silvermoon lineage that we needed to infuse our pack with new blessings and blood.
How could I explain to her that I just needed to know she would be safe? She chaffed at every restriction I put on
her.
I frowned and retreated to my office to look over some files but ended up staring out the window instead.
Finally, I called Quinn to my office. I should truly have called Tegan, but something about his scent lately was throwing me off. There was a discontent to him that hadn’t been there before. I thought it was just his sister’s unhappiness spilling over, but now I was wondering if I would need to challenge my own Beta.
Quinn arrived with a crisp salute and ready competence. She listened carefully as I explained what I needed, then disappeared for several hours. When she returned, I left to inspect her work.
I enacted a few final touches, then I went to find Avery.
By the sounds of stomping in her room, she was still mad at me. That was fine. When she stomped, she was easy to keep track of. Still, I hoped to return some of the lightness to her steps.
My plan was very nearly derailed when I noticed my brother’s business card had been tucked into the doorfram of her room. It was still there though, which meant she hadn’t opened the door to let him in.
Still, I would kill him for trying to see her.
I rapped on Avery’s door and when she opened it, I did my best attempt at a nonchalant greeting, which is to say, I grasped her hand immediately and hauled her out into the hallway and down the stairs.
I didn’t trust myself to say the right thing.
She muttered some complaint, as I expected, which was why I just needed to show her.
We left out the back door, and down a paving stone path towards a part of the pack complex I rarely visited. Truthfully, the memories were painful.
But sometimes things need to change.
A large stone wall and heavy door loomed in front of us. I let go of Avery’s hand and pulled out the heavy iron key Quinn had given me. Slowly, I turned the rusty bolt and pulled the door open. I gestured for Avery to lead the way inside.
She stopped almost immediately, eyes wide as she looked around.
